Dishonored quests signposted due to baffled playtesters

Dishonored playtesters struggled to complete the famous Lady Boyle mission, which is why the dialogue practically begs you to find the solution.

In the Lady Boyle mission, players are tasked with dispatching one of three near-identical targets. Speaking to, executive producer Julien Roby said Arkane has to make possible solutions to the mission more obvious.

“We try not to lead the player by the nose, but at some point we found that if we don’t give a little information, people just get lost and don’t know what to do. It’s just overwhelming,” he said of Arkane’s design process.

“So we tried to add this element that gave just a hint, to help a little. But we try to do it as little as possible.”

The delightful Tim challenged Roby on this, suggesting the character dialogue hinting that players should go upstairs to find clues is a little heavy-handed, but Roby was adamant that this puzzle had flummoxed testers before these clues were added.

“People would just walk around. They didn’t know what to do. They didn’t even go upstairs because a guard told them they couldn’t. They’d say ‘Okay, I can’t go upstairs.’ They wouldn’t do anything,” he explained.

There are multiple paths through the Lady Boyle mission; some players off all three targets, Dave handed Lady Boyle over to a kidnapper; and I lured the correct target into the music room with my harpsichord sweet talk, knocked her out and threw her in the fire.
