Just a reminder that Radical’s action-adventure epic Prototype 2 is now available for the magic thinky box as promised, despite the developer’s recent downsizing. The open-world effort hit consoles in April, was well-received and topped the charts.

Prototype 2 is still releasing on PC, Radical’s confirmed, despite the studio being reduced to a “support” capacity by Activision last week.

Amazon‘s offering for today only another Gold Box games deal. Prototype 2 will be discounted to $29.99, with Final Fantasy XIII-2, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the premium edition of Disgaea 4 and more set to join it. There’s more through the link.

Prototype 2′s second DLC pack, Excessive Force, will be made available later today on the US PS Store and Xbox Live for $4.99/400 MS Points. It will land on the European end of the PS Store via tomorrow’s update. The DLC contains: the Viral Infector Grenade Launcher, three Force Multiplier Powers, and three custom skins. Activision launches Prototype 2 today worldwide, ahead of a massive lifting of its reviews embargo later today. A few exclusive scores have already popped out, with OPM UK going as high as nine to a seven from IGN, the latter calling it “forgettable fun”. Activision has released a new video for Prototype 2 which demonstrates the new Pack leader ability Heller can perform in the game. How it works, is he calls upon infected Brawlers and forces them to fight for him. Once summoned, Heller directs his these new allies to destroy tanks, helicopters other enemies, or whatever he needs them to do. They will follow his orders despite the danger to themselves. You can see how this works out for yourself below. Prototype 2 is out next week on PS3 and Xbox 360. The PC version releases in July.

Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz has deduced Prototype 2 will “struggle” to sell 500,000 units in the US during its first year on the market, predicting the title will see a “soft performance” compared to sales of the original title. Creutz noted the game has yet to break Amazon’s top 100 selling games charts, which was “typically a bad sign for actual sales.” The firm originally expected the title to “slightly exceed” the 900,000 units Prototype 1 sold in the US during its first year. It has been announced that Blockbuster will exclusively carry the Prototype 2 Limited Edition in the UK. Activision is teaming up with GameStop for a contest where one lucky winner will drive home with a Camaro themed after the 1SS Heller drives in the game. We couldn’t find a shot of it, so the real-life version in the header will have to suffice. The winner will also win a limited edition Sgt. James Heller leather jacket – one of only 200 created – and have $2,000 put into their pocket. The contest starts today and runs through April 30.
