Dota 2 has surpassed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to nab the record of most concurrent users on Steam. Dota 2 peaked at 297,010 users on March 1, overtaking Skyrim’s 287,411, which at the RPG’s launch was the highest total player number Valve’s service had ever recorded for a single title. The occasion was noted by a Reddit user and even charted, showing the MOBA’s player base growing steadily; expect it to hold the record for quite some time.

Dota 2 tournament organisers and casters Beyond the Summit have reached out to fans on IndieGoGo to help them fund a new studio to work out of. Gamers managed to stump up their required $25,000 in under a day.

Valve founder Gabe Newell has given an hour-long lecture about his company’s creation, the state of the games industry and insight into its various games and tools. Newell discussed all of this and more at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas yesterday, and it’s a very interesting chat that touches on the issue of productivity in the PC market and the shipping of the original Half-Life.

Dota 2 beta invites can now be sold for real-world cash via the Steam Community Market, so if you’ve got a spare invite handy, you can chuck it on there and make… not very much at all actually.

Independent eSports league ESL has announced a Dota 2 tournament offering $156,000 across four seasons in 2013. The tournament is not affiliated with Valve’s official competitions, and is open to European teams only. It’s the largest Dota 2 competition in the region and will be broadcast live on ESL TV. Registrations for a South African Dota 2 league have closed, with 116 teams signing up to compete in the tournament, making it the largest Dota 2 tournament to-date.

Dota 2 has been updated by Valve with not only a new patch, but a new hero: Medusa. Attacks doled out by Medusa include the split shot, mystic snake, and a mana shield which absorbs 50% of damage, and of course stone gaze. Spice up your DOTA 2 sessions with a $10 DLC pack containing an alternate voice for the Announcer and Mega-Kills Announcer. This one’s a little bit special though – it’s the voice of Bastion’s narrator, the indie dungeon-crawler’s most recognisable attribute. DotA 2′s winter update was rumoured to add a new Frostivus mode into the mix, but Valve has announced that the Frostivus celebrations are now officially cancelled, thanks to a sudden infestation of Greevils. Instead, ‘The Greeviling’ will see players battering the tiny tykes in return for gifts, and to drive them out of the land once and for all. See the trailer and get the update details after the jump.

DotA 2 is getting a new winter patch soon, although Valve is – obviously – being deathly silent on the issue. However, the latest patch has been analysed by a gamer, who has unearthed a huge list of avatar gear, festive artwork, sound effects, graphics and nods to a new ‘Frostivius’ game mode that could add ice-skating into the mix. DotA 2 maybe heading to PC and Mac, but developer Valve is also toying with the idea of a tablet version. Gabe Newell has revealed that his team is looking into it, but that so far tests haven’t been all that successful. Get his quotes below.

DOTA 2′s Australian servers are just a few weeks away, Valve’s Milton Ngan, a likely sympathetic New Zealand-born staffer, revealed on the MOBA’s developer forum. The equipment for Valve’s Sydney data centre has “just arrived”, apparently, and should be racked and configured by January 2013. No more extra-continental ping on local matches; it is a fever dream come to life in glorious technicolour.

Valve has released a short film chronicling the events of this year’s major DOTA 2 tournament, The International, which carried a $1 million grand prize. If you’ve never really understood eSports and MOBA it makes for an excellent introductory taster, cramming a lot of action into just over 20 minutes. For those who followed along it’s a pretty good refresher, boasting interviews with competitors and other goodies in addition to a recp of the tournament. Watch the whole thing through the break.
