The latest figures from Sony show that it sold 3.5 million PS3 and PS4 units combined during the first quarter of the financial year.

That's compared to only 1.1 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles shipped during the same three months ended June 30 for Microsoft, as noted by GamesIndustry.biz.

Sales in Sony's Games division were up 95.7 percent during the quarter, primarily due to the success of the PlayStation 4, generating $2.5 billion.
