It follows Nintendo's denial that it will reveal new hardware at E3 2014. However, it has confirmed that it is working on new hardware of some kind.

Iwata, 54, was advised to avoid travelling overseas next week by physicians, but was deemed fit to continue at work.

Nintendo vice president of corporate affairs Cindy Gordon told the site, "He's been instructed by his physician not to travel overseas in the immediate future, and so he will not be making the trip to Los Angeles.

"Please understand that it is business as usual for Mr. Iwata, and he continues his normal duties as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. while he remains in Japan. As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo's activities at the show."

Nintendo will not hold an on-stage conference at E3 next week, but it will publish a new Nintendo Direct stream with all of its new announcements. Get all the details on how you can watch the broadcast here.
