UPDATED: Borderlands 'pre-sequel' coming to PS3 & Xbox 360, takes place on moon, site claims

Borderlands: The Pre-sequel! is said to be coming out of developer 2K Australia this year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. It's rumoured to be set on Pandora's moon Elpis, according to a new report.

UPDATE 2: Allegedly, the game's full title is Borderlands: The Pre-sequel! With the exclamation mark and all.

UPDATE: Our local 2K Games rep has been in touch with a simple "no comment," reply.

ORIGINAL STORY: It follows Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teasing some form of next-gen project from the studio.

GamePointsNow claims that the new game will star four new characters, Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap. Athena first appeared in original Borderlands expansion The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, Wilhelm was a boss in Borderlands 2, and Fragtrap is an upgraded Claptrap robot.

Wilhelm is said to make use of shoulder-mounted cannons and drones that can be summoned into battle, while Athena is claimed to be a melee-class fighter with a kinetic shield that absorbs bullets and a plasma sword. She sounds like Borderlands 2's Zero.

The site claims that players will be taking orders from a programmer called John, who later grows up to be Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack. He's looking for an alien artefact. Apparently, the game will bring two new gun classes that feature laser and freezing cryo effects, and that the low gravity on Elpis will see you shooting enemies into space and using jetpacks to thrust your way across the surface.

Oxygen is also finite, and must be replenished using 'OX-kits.' It's claimed you can also shatter enemies' helmets to deprive them of oxygen. It's also believed that the game will take players to Hyperion's giant H-shaped base that can be seen orbiting Pandora in Borderlands 2.

The game will cover the five year gap between the first two instalments. The site claims that the title is out in 2014, but both Gearbox and 2K are staying quiet for the time being. Via OXM.
