Sony to shut down multiplayer servers for Gran Turismo 5, Resistance series, more

Monday, 6th January 2014 14:15 GMT By Sherif Saed

Sony has announced it’s shutting down online multiplayer servers and ceasing all online functionality support for titles such as Gran Turismo 5 and all the Resistance series. Find out your last chance to play them online inside.

In a service update on the PS Blog, the firm confirmed the dates and all the affected titles.

As of March 28 all online functions for Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 will no longer be available. And as of May 20 all online functions for Gran Turismo 5 will no longer be available.

This follows Sony’s announcement to shut down the online service for SOCOM 4, which is effective this month.

Such a pity. Resistance was a super series that turned the wrong way, perhaps, with it’s second outing.

A little foolish to do this so soon, no? Sure, it will save money in the short term, but what does it tell prospective customers about the longevity of PS titles online?

Since everyone seems to prefer GT6 I don’t think that’s an issue, really. Resistance games are another matter, though. I can understand shutting down multi for Resistance 1, but taking them all down? I’m guessing nobody was playing?

Sony championed Killzone (R2 did enjoy a brief bit of limelight, but the game didn’t catch on) and Resistance seemed a distant second.
I don’t fault them in pushing KZ, because to their credit they (well, Guerilla) did build that franchise from its PS2 roots into something stronger. They made good return on Sony’s belief investment.
