Starbound has gone into beta and will be made available on Steam later today, and you can also still pre-order the title from its official website. The beta will be released in three stages. The procedurally-generated sandbox title is expected for release on Vita and pulled in over $1 million in pre-orders. The beta trailer is below.

So this is essentially Terraria with spaceships and planets?

    I can get behind that.

Known about this one for a while. The avian race is adorable, and it has a singing function similar to how LOTRO’s worked (which was the only reason I stayed with LOTRO for any amount of time, since playing music with a group without using automation actually required timing and skill).

I’m not sure about the rest of it, but I know I like that! I’m worried that the grinding will put me off, but… visiting alien worlds as a little avian person is something I can dig.

Been playing it this afternoon, it’s a lot of fun. It’s Terraria with everything that Terraria was missing for me; a sense of progression and direction, a more robust crafting interface, actual reasons to build the stuff I build beyond Terraria’s Put NPC A In Box B, and unlimited scope for expansion and exploration thanks to the ability to keep procedurally generating more worlds. It’s a blast.
