Ouya 2.0 releasing sometime in 2014, improved controllers in the works

Friday, 25th October 2013 20:21 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Ouya founder and CEO Julie Uhrman has said to expect “Ouya 2.0″ and an updated controller to launch sometime next year.

Speaking with Polygon, Uhrman said the date hasn’t been finalized just yet nor has the firm determined “what exactly we want that to be.”

“The software is constantly iterating because we want to make it constantly better,” she said. “We don’t want to wait six months and then go boom here are all these new features and functionality For the hardware, we are looking at different chips.

“We are looking at what type of performance we want.”

The updated controller will be an improved version based on user feedback. The triggers, thumbsticks and the feel of the controller have all been tweaked.

“Part of that is taking that feedback, iterating that software, fixing the triggers, fixing the thumbsticks and if that doesn’t work, we’ll iterate it again and if we decide that’s not the right path, we’ll change it,” she said. “I think that’s one thing that differentiates us. We don’t have this firm path we’re going to stay on come hell or high water. We take the feedback from gamers, from developers and we iterate and we change. When it’s not working we say so.”

Uhrman said the company hasn’t made a decision whether Ouya 2.0 and its improved controllers will replace the current model or if the two will co-exist in market.

They gotta a lot of work to do. i think they need to make significant changes on that controller and not just little tweaks here and there. She didn’t even mention how the buttons stick. The Gui was a mess. At least they are aware of all the issues and want to get them resolved quickly. That says a lot. I don’t know how they are going to stay afloat, when they aren’t making a large profit off the games. I know they got other investors to support them, but will it be enough is sales start to decline over the next year or so?

I think they should market it as a “Steam Box” that would probably sell a lot more units and appeal to a lot more people.

They also need to improve the specs on this thing, I mean really the current hardware is based on Tegra 3 and 1GB RAM which is pretty dated now. They should aim to include Tegra 4 or a variant of it or maybe even Tegra 5 if they can get the launch to coincide with it. It needs AT LEAST 2GB RAM they should try for 4GB but this may bump the price up too much. It needs USB3.0 support as well something which was lacking from the first machine, and Wireless ac as standard to allow better game streaming from your high end PC system to your TV.

It is a shame and I feel sorry for those who brought the original machine as it really seems like they ALL beta tested the console for them.

The controller definitely needs tuning, but I wouldn’t call for a full redesign. Yes, if you play xbox/ps all day you’ll be confused, but you are not really their target market.

What they need to do is improve the wifi range. Making sure the faceplate of the controller arrives in places, and remove the hidden pricing BS in the store.

Foremost, they need to change their gameplan to actually attract AAA devers… just saying ouya failed because it would not or could not attract enough big known games / companies.
I don’t know but it seems like sony/ms/nintendo did NOT always perfectly succeeded with all their machines, controllers, Guis etc… but they were and still are profitable in spite of misteps or consumers dislike one way or another.
