New Kinect allows you to stand three feet closer than the original

Wednesday, 23rd October 2013 21:37 GMT By Ewan Miller

The new Kinect will require you to stand only 1.4m (four and a half feet) away from the sensor if you’re playing alone instead of 1.8m (six feet) like the original Kinect, a leaked Brazilian Xbox One installation manual has revealed. If playing with a friend, you’ll have to stand about 1.8m (six feet) away from the new Kinect, instead of two metres. Additionally the sensor has to be placed half a metre off the ground and no higher than 1.8m in the air.

The manual also suggests a higher placement of the Kinect for Xbox One is preferable and clarified that an Xbox Live Gold membership will be required to use services such as Skype on the new system.

A good Xbox One installation also apparently involves connecting the console up to the internet and using a 720p television.

Does the new Kinect’s range mean it’ll finally fit in your living room?

Thanks, Polygon and NeoGAF.

    You may want to check your maths – I’m 1.9m tall and I’m definitely not over 8 feet :P

    Despite knowing academically that a foot is about 30cm, as soon as I see a measurement in feet my head just shuts down as if it’s some Lovecraftian tome.

    This is good news, I have enough space in my room to use the original Kinect (just barely), so this one should work much easier. After using the Kinect to play Kinect Sports Rivals at the Xbox One Tour I’m definitely sold on the device and that game. November 22nd needs to get here!

    Still to restrictive for placement. Looks like this machine will be way to bulky and complex to move around the house. Ugh.

    @1 gold is selling for $40 online right now. Not to bad.

    Good news for my living room. It was working out to be just a touch too small for the original Kinect. I won’t have to stand way back in the corner now.

    so are they just off setting the distance thing by basically saying you need to install it higher? Wouldn’t that be almost the same case for kinect 1? sorry i really dont know, im just asking.

    @11

    You could do that on the PS4 as well but would need 8 controllers and have to calibrate it before each game and still not get close to what Kinect 2 is capable of.
