Microsoft extends free Xbox Games with Gold program for Xbox 360

Friday, 18th October 2013 10:00 GMT By Dave Owen

Free games are good, and Xbox 360 Gold subscribers are going to continue getting them, as Microsoft has announced that the Games with Gold program is going to continue indefinitely. There’s no mention of Xbox One, though.

“At E3 2013, we launched Games with Gold as a limited-time program to thank our Xbox Live Gold members,” reads a new post on the News Wire. “Within that short period of time, we’ve seen an overwhelming response, with more than 120 million hours played with Games with Gold titles. Today, as a part of the Week of Xbox Live, we’re excited to announce that we are making Games with Gold an ongoing benefit for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox 360.

“Whether they are blockbuster AAA or popular arcade titles, Games with Gold continues to offer a diverse mix of games with two free Xbox 360 titles a month – yours to keep and at no additional cost,” it continues. “According to recent surveys, 97 percent of participating members have given their stamp of approval for Games with Gold, and we’re excited to continue bringing you great games every month as part of our ongoing commitment to providing great value on Xbox 360.”

Currently available for free with a Gold subscription is Halo 3.

The post makes no mention of whether or not the program will feature on Xbox One.

@1 You can joke, but getting genuinelly free games that I get to keep regardless of whether I’m subscribed or not is great. I haven’t played several games that have been offered so far, and just because they’re older games, doesn’t make them any less good.

I love what Sony are doing with PS+, but it’s a glorified rental system, not a free games service.

Also, don’t expect the same level of quality on PS4 – they’re not going to give away many of the 20 games that get released with the console in the first month.

    This is good.

Yes, the first months of PS+ will be FULL of indie games which i personally don’t care much about, since i can get them very very cheap through the Humble Bundle sales for example, or on Steam.

A looser is a loser who can’t spell “loser”.
Moron: “Hey man, you are teh looser!”
Guy: “It’s spelled ‘loser’ you uneducated bastard.”

    2. looser
Idiotic way of spelling “loser”. Most often used by teens and adults with no more than a 2nd grade grammar level.
Guy 1: OMG! Todd is such a looser!

Guy 2: I told myself I was going to do this do the next person I saw spelling the word “loser” like that; so now I am going to set your house on fire. You brought this upon yourself.

There are some older games which i never bought and im someone who is not jumping to xbox1 til i finish all my current games which at this rate is gonna take a few years.
I still haven’t even played Skyrim, Borderlands 2 yet.
Its a good service better than PS+ as thats rental, stop paying you cant play those games anymore.

Good stuff and another good example of how having both MS and Sony strong is good for owners of either.

@2 & @3 It’s better the more systems you own though. Single PS+ sub gets you new games on PSV, PS3 and PS4 every month.

Nice seeing MS stepping up, maybe Sony will offer free-to-keep games too.

If this doesn’t continue to Xbox One, they’ve missed a trick. I also think that if it does go to X1, then the games will be newer, due to console being out less time.

@12 You’d hope so. Something like Lococycle offered free would’ve been a nice Launch Day sweetener.

Alternatively, you could say: “@7 Loser is you. Looser is your mom’s vagina.”
You can add a “zing!” or equivalent at your convenience.

I don’t know what list your looking at but the games I see PS+ are giving away at launch haven’t and most likely aren’t going to be coming to a bundle anytime soon.

    1. Resogun recently announced as free to Plus members at launch
    2. Elder Scrolls Online Beta free and first on PS4
    3. Drive Club Plus Edition as free to Plus members at launch
    4. Don’t Starve will be released as a Plus download
    5. Outlast will be released as a Plus download
    6. Secret Ponchos will be released as a Plus download
    7. DC Universe PS4 Edition available to download and play at launch
    8. Blacklight Retribution available to download and play at launch
    9. Planetside 2 available to download and play in the launch window
    10. Warframe available to download and play at launch
    11. Warthunder available to download and play at launch

I know those some of thoses technically arent free PS+ games but they are still free regardless.

Dont Starve is still selling very well, I cant see it being in a bundle for at least one year to two

Outlast has really only just came out and isn’t the type of game you get in a bundle anyway, you get a good discount to £8 but it never really drops below that for a year or something

Resogun and secret ponchos are exclusive to the PS4 so you aren’t likely to be getting them in a bundle…

    @17

For the people who don’t game on a PC they are, and that’s like 90% of the people who will be buying a PS4

And even if they are also free on PC, that doesnt make them any less free on the PlayStation, Its a benefit for PS gamers regardless of whether you like SONY or not.

Also, they don’t require PS+ to play.

@2 i’m sorry it’s like saying all those pay to play MMORPG’s on PC aren’t owned by anyone which isn’t true.Same applies here with the difference that Ps+ has lower subscriptions and many…many games that you technicaly have forever. It’s just that if you’re not subscribed those games are locked just like in those MMORPG’s your account is.
Technicaly in both cases you have the game(s)

@2 & 3 – You guys should give thanks to Sony for encouraging MS to do something like this. MS didn’t answer to PS PLUS’s monthly games till it was releasing a new console. Sony has been doing it now for a long time.

On comparisons, most of the games announced I already had and are old, so im not impressed. I find Sony’s version much more appealing. As long as I am a PS plus member, I get to play any game I had downloaded previously. Like XBL, once you are on it, you will probably keep on it. If I do quit and come back, I still have access to all the games I downloaded previously. And the best part, these games are decent games and a big selection, compared to the two old games that MS gives us.

HALO 3….What a joke…Everyone who wanted that title already has it, and best buy is selling for $10 right now, so who cares.

Even free games starts an argument, lol.

This is good news for anyone keeping with current gen for now and proves that they really are continuing it support 360 for now.

    @21

Its funny though, If it was MS giving away such a good collection of games and SONY was giving away the pretty much worthless ones, all the MS fanboys would be attacking the SONY ones about how ‘SONY’s collection of free games suck’

for some reason now if you have an xbox you have to hate anything thats exclusive to the PS3 and if your on the PS3 you have to hate anything thats exclusive to Xbox, Its so stupid…

I do have PSN but not PS+ and I do have a XBL gold account(for netflix at girlfriends house) and its clear who the winner is, PS+! in terms of quality with what you get.

Sure, the ‘but their not really your games, once the PS+ expires you cant play them’ argument is valid to a degree…

But you have to factor in you pay around the same amount for PS+ that you do for XBL but what differs between them is the games SONY gives you access to whilst paying for PS+ its a tiny amount per month for the games you get to play AND up until the PS4 its been entirely optional, and will still be optional for users just wanting to stay with the PS3.

@Panthro Are you serious? From what I see it’s the other way around… in a big way! Major Xbox One bashing and lots of Dry humping of Sony’s own PR machine. I’ve never seen this much childish nonsense in what really boils down to personal taste in a particular gaming device.

    It is all immaterial.
