Dragon Age: Inquisition sex scenes to be “mature and tasteful”, says BioWare dev

Dragon Age: Inquisition will once-again allow players to forge romantic relationships with other party members, but this time BioWare is binning the lace pants in favour of something more realistic and tasteful.

Speaking with GamerZines, cinematic director Jonathan Perry said, “We certainly could push those romance scenes in any direction we wanted really. Something that didn’t work well is that we tried more, well I won’t say graphic, but in Dragon Age: Origins we had characters crawling around in their underwear and it looked weird because they were wearing these lacy Victoria’s Secret panties and outfits which looked out of place.”

Weirdly, Perry added that the decision isn’t just a matter of controversy or toning-down. It’s also a budget concern. He continued, “Certainly when you have these characters interacting with each other in such an intimate way it’s incredibly expensive in terms of animation fidelity and getting it to look like they are really there and touching each other. I think Mass Effect’s scenes were done really well and I think we will take Inquisition’s scenes in that direction.

“You might have a nude character but they are framed in such a way that parts of them are in shadow, or having characters in various states of undress. We also want to focus not just on the sex itself, but also that this is the culmination of spending a lot of time with a character and getting to know them, and so we’re giving scenes a mature and tasteful treatment I guess. We’ll see where it goes for Dragon Age: Inquisition, it’s something that we’re working on right now so we’ll see how these scenes pan out.”

Did you feel that previous sex scenes in BioWare RPGs were distasteful or unrealistic? Are you happy with this new direction? Do you care at all?

Let us know below.

We also heard from BioWare that Dragon Age: Inquisition is not technically open world. They refer to it as ‘multi-region’. Find out what that means here.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will hit PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2014.

Great! It was the MAIN news I was waiting for coming from an RPG with a great background, and a great story…Pathetic is Bioware obliged to communicate about this ” Unique selling point” to build or keep its fan base???

I hope they are fully clothed and off camera while they do it… Seeing/ hearing anything to do with sex makes my willy get all tense and cry, and I don’t like upsetting it.

I think the guys over at facial abuse should direct the sex scenes, they know how to keep it tasteful.

@2 They still do trust me, that’s why I’m more interested to bury myself in Wasteland 2 when it comes out.

Nudity and Sex is important to some extent when you’re talking about role-playing games but I don’t really care about how graphic or limited they are. None of us played DAO or any ME games just to get into Morrigan or Liara’s pants. I was just glad that you could show affection toward a companion and it would affect the plot no matter the significance.

Sex and nudity in games has gone from controversial to complete apathy this gen so you don’t have to keep shoving it up in there over and over.

I don’t see why we can’t have the equivilent of a R rated movie in a M rated video game. ….It would be nice if games grew up in this way. we don’t need overtly physical scenes but if you have a romance, a romantic love scene makes sense.

The “Oh my god my children” thing is really old now, can we not expect parents to be parents?

@12 Oh yes, we don’t want PETA getting upset. They’ll be camped outside Bioware for months.

Parents should start reading the stickers on the back of games and stop crying and pointing fingers when they have fucked up…

Its like giving your kid money to buy a serbian film without first seeing what the film contains, and then one day you catch him trying to stick his dick in one of his little sisters baby dolls and he tells you its from the movie you bought him… is it the creators fault? It is a sick movie and all but no, it tells you what kind of unsuitable content the film contains on the back! its the parents for not properly parenting there child and monitoring what they buy them.

why add a bloody sex scene to a damn game?
it’s a GAME for goodness sake man.
if i wanna watch someone having sex, I can go and watch porn for it:/

@xino So basically every time you watch a tv series or a movie that has a romance scene with sex you switch to pornhub and ejaculate? WOW!

This is why I don’t trust BioWare anymore. I get that they add sex scenes, romance and whatnot. It’s great, sure.

But the fact that there is such a large focus on it from the and the media makes me sick.

Make it a nice surprise instead and instead talk about what to do about all the shit that was screwed up in Dragon Age 2.

    i call bullshit on that

ME3 and DA2 sex scenes were too short, too censorized and too fucking lame to be honest

if they literly combine ME2 scenes with the witcher 2 nudity then you have a gold mine of a sex cutscene

but i know EA is scared shitless of FOX horseshit news
so i know they’ll half ass it

BioWare has better character relationships and details than most games on console. The main story lines are great, however, I play their games because it’s just not mission after mission. I like the humorous dialogue, friendships, and relationships that occur while trying to save the world! I think it’s “natural” (if that is what they are going for) that characters develop bonds and romances. Romance leads to sex…if not you need to hang with boring Sebastian! I don’t want porn but, I want to feel like my romances lead up to something special….something more complex. Please BioWare do not copy Skyrim! After thousands of hours and playing every option they have, it is all the same…buy a necklace, your spouse has one line for you, and just fight over and over with no direction or complex interactions…BORING! Make my time worth it…fights, weapons, romance, sex and customization!! You’re as good as your details!

I am a parent and yes I have a kiddo and NO way am I going to introduce my kiddo to anything more than romance or more than a kiss. Even 2 characters laying down on a bed and on top of each other is just too much for my 9 years old, period.

I don;t get it, were you talking about me? hehehehe

I agree with #23 here. Don’t give in to the medieval view of the human body. It’s realistic and natural that people have sex if they develop a romantic relationship. Unless of course you’re some orthodox catholic or something. The human body isn’t an abomination. Don’t hide it. Show it when it should be shown. Sex isn’t the problem, the context that you put it in is what defines it. And also as #23 drumhilda said, its not porn we’re after here and it isn’t porn if you base it on a romantic relationship.

And to Sebastian here(#24), you would show your 9 year old a game where you shop people with swords but 2 people making love is bad for him? Amazing how that logic works right? And yes, Drumhilda was talking to you.

Bioware, we don’t need more conservatism to the world, we need less. Sex is natural. Please don’t make it unnatural by censoring it. You’ve already shown us that you value realism when it comes to character relationship building in Mass effect and Dragon Age(Although you censored it quite significantly in the second game, in both franchises!). You started liberal but then went conservative. Go all the way! You can do it! :)

I’m really hoping the sexual content in this game will be like no other, I wouldn’t want to sound like a pig and request “dirty sex” but just very romantic lusty scenes, hopefully more nudity too but romance is really the key here, I don’t think it needs anything other than that just hopefully more interesting characters and a great plot and the relationship build up being something special, even so, without the nudity and such, i am extremely excited for this game as it is (from what ive heard so far.)

That is the risk of a rational, well your rational in this case that comprehend a situation that is not lived, yet, can perform a subjective truth
When I game, I do not clutter myself in a dark room with a 5 feet deep door. My house is configured as such that my PC is in the middle of 3 rooms so regardless of my intention of gaming, there is a potential risk my kiddo just drop in the middle of an activity that is essentially not age appropriate. No I do not bubble wrap my kid but it is certainly not a reason to make her precocious through imagery.

By itself, sex and romance is a + in a RPG game but in all honestly it is not even remotely needed at all!!!
So then what does that mean?
Does that mean Bioware cannot make good games without sex anymore from lack of balls to create story telling trying to appeal target audience 8~20 or is it overdosed creative syndrome perhaps or maybe something else?

Yet defending sexual activity in any form or aspect based on rational and reasoning as you did makes me laugh hard because I am not pro conservatism, nor pro liberal, in other words I don’t give a fuck and put a sticker on my face but all I am saying is this, there is NO need for sexual content in games to be good, appealing, attractive, and it can alert kids to make decision based on what they previously saw and would like to experience while they are NOT in age yet to make such decision from a action/consequences stand point.
If you wish your kid be preggy at 13, leave school at 15 and work at Mac DO, go ahead, be my fucking guess buddy but throw this kind of game in hand once ok, alright my fault, but not twice.
I think I have deepen enough my point.

“Dragon Age: Inquisition sex scenes to be “mature and tasteful”, says BioWare dev”

Maybe, but we’re still relying on their definition of “mature and tasteful” and I’m not sure they are qualified to make that distinction for everyone. We already know where their proclivities lie.
