Beyond: Two Souls edited slightly to secure 16+ rating, edits worth 5-10 seconds of gameplay

Beyond: Two Souls has been edited in Europe to secure a PEGI 16+ rating, while another scene has been changed in the US. Sony has discussed the nature of the changes, which equate to about 5-10 seconds of gameplay.

Responding to fans on PS Blog US, European Product Manager at SCEE, Ross Alexander said, “There are only two amends between the EU and US versions of the game, amounting to about 5-10 seconds of gameplay that’s not been removed, just edited slightly to be in line with a PEGI 16 rating.

“For Beyond we wanted to make the game available to as many people as possible, hence applying for a PEGI 16 rating. The 5-10 seconds I mention above would have upped our rating to a PEGI 18, so it made perfect sense to make these two VERY minimal changes to get our planned 16 rating.

“I can assure you that this does not affect the game’s story at all, and that if you didn’t know these scenes had been amended, you wouldn’t even notice.”

NeoGaf spotted Alexander’s comment and did a little digging on the edited scenes in question. Go here if you want to know more but be warned, THEY ARE SPOILERS.

What do you think of the above?

Theres also the fact that the US version may well be censored (because thats what it is, its not “edited”, its just straight up censorship), which means there won’t actually be an uncut version of this game.

Here in the UK we used to get our own versions of games from SCE, so there would be the German version, then the EU version and then the UK one. All of the copies are now from the same source.

Its bull. Its utter fucking bull.

I thought Cage was all about showing that video games could exist perfectly well without violence? That redacted scene is pretty Goddman violent there bud…

Why are they giving this game grief when GTA features DILDOS, PENIS and soft core porn?

@3 Who’s giving it grief? They want a 16+ PEGI rating. Plus, its more realistic than GTA.

Wait. This is really confusing. The article makes it sound like the US gets scenes that the EU doesn’t but the first sentence makes it sound like the American version is also censored.

Most every scene in a David Cage game doesn’t serve the plot anyway so I wouldn’t be worried. You’d be lucky if the scene in question has any impact on the story, and I’m sure it won’t at all as usual.

But we’re still getting the signature David Cage completely unnecessary shower scene then? Oh well, fine by me.

In the US version a erotic scene is censored.

In the EU version a violent scene (impale) is removed.

    The scenes are 5-10sec gameplay.

The normal stuff, EU is fine with nudity but not with violence.

US is fine with violence but not with nudity.

#1 has nothing to do with Germany, they just want a 16 rating and the impale scene would make it 18.

So they removed that scene to get the 16 rating.

It’s really weird… Heavy Rain was 18+. Why are they going with 16+ this time around with Beyond? are they dumbing it down? i mean yeah sure a game doesn’t need erotic scenes or much violence to be good, but i mean why? i thought David Cage’s games are for the “Adult” audience…. Guess not anymore.
