Don Mattrick announces three more Zynga exec departures

Wednesday, 14th August 2013 16:11 GMT By Staff

Zynga CEO has announced that three more executives have left the company.

UPDATE: Gamespot reports that – as expected – chief technology officer Cadir Lee, chief operating officer David Ko, and chief people officer Colleen McCreary have left Zynga as part of Don Matrick’s restructuring efforts.

In an email to all employees, Mattrick said of the trio’s departure, “We are taking layers out of the executive rank to get senior leaders closer to important product initiatives, With that in mind, I have asked the leaders to sharpen their focus and properly densify talent to resource teams.”

“Each person has contributed to the growth of Zynga and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cadir Lee for his dedication in the creation of a world class technical organization during his five year tenure, Colleen for her work with our recruitment and people process over the last 4 years, and David Ko for the 3 years that he spent in leading various teams across the organization.

“We appreciate their contributions to Zynga’s first chapter and wish them well in their future endeavors.”

What do you make of the above?

ORIGINAL STORY: AllThingsD and the WallStreetJournal both cite anonymous sources for the repeat rumour.

According to the whisperers, chief operating officer David Ko, chief people officer Colleen McCreary and chief technology officer Cadir Lee will leave the social publisher.

Zynga hasn’t commented on the rumour, but the company is expected to announce it to staff today, presumably before close of business on the west coast, where it is headquartered.

Zynga recently appointed former Xbox boss Don Mattrick to replace founder Mark Pincus as CEO; if accurate, this executive restructuring will be the first major public act of the new chief’s tenure.

Mattrick is expected to detail further changes to Zynga’s operations today, including naming his direct subordinates. In a recent call to investors, he hinted at serious leadership changes.

Zynga has been bleeding senior staff for a good year now, with three more departures as recently as late last month. It’s also been actively cutting both staff and games.

Thanks, Polygon.

I think this very man is the reason I’m so sceptical of the Xbox One. I mean this man is the guy who initially set the path for the Xbox One.
Before Microsoft he was at EA at a time, in my opinion, they were at their lowest & now he’s at a social gaming company, implying that he sees that as the future so I’d imagine he must have internally pushed Xbox on a similar path.

When you hire a new CEO at a company where things are going badly, you almost always follow that up by firing people.

It starts at the top, as you want to get rid of the people who can’t lead you towards the path the new CEO sees as the right one, then it trickles down – as new plans are made, divisions and thereby people get rearranged and for some there’s no room in the new org.

It’s neither shocking or a sign of anything other than a new CEO with new ideas.

@3 “When Mattrick goes somewhere, there gonna be ruined.”

He went to Zynga to trim some fat (fire unnecessary people) and get Zynga’s ship back on course. This is his job.

I’m not gonna miss this douche. He was probably the one who invented ‘always online’ ‘no working without kinect’ ‘all digital’ and 500$ cost. After he went, this were all removed.
