StarCraft Universe MMO Kickstarter launches

The Blizzard-approved StarCraft Universe MMO mod has taken to Kickstarter. Developer Upheaval Arts hopes to raise enough funds to create the game’s first act and to get a public beta on the move.

As we reported back in February, StarCraft Universe is published via and the mod takes StarCraft 2 from an RTS to a fully-blown MMO title.

The StarCraft Universe Kickstarter campaign is now live and the team is seeking $80,000. At the time of writing it has amassed $3,790 with 29 days left.

StarCraft Universe is set in an alternate version of Blizzard’s world, where the Protoss are defeated at the end of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty and the universe is thrust into a struggle for survival. It tells the story of how the game’s races and characters endure during those dark days.

Upheaval Arts is aiming to make the third-person MMO free-to-play and playable via using StarCraft 2. Stretch goals include making the Zerg a playable race, creating a MOBA-style PvP component, adding new story acts and much more.

    I think it is absolutely amazing that an RTS engine is capable of this. Really, and the team working on this map are really talented, judging by what i’ve tried of the map. Good luck to them!

    Just seemed like you were saying this was innovative when Blizzard did it previously with WOW granted they had a studio with 100 people but still they did it 7 years ago.

    There are plenty of indies that communicate via skype. The most innovative thing if anything is Blizzard allowing them.

    MMO is not how I envisioned multiplay on SC2. The way I envisioned is this way: With graphics the way they are now. You will still cast a 1v1 / two teams but with multiple players on each team each controlling specific types of units, for example, one player could control bio units, another player air units (medivacs, vikings, etc.) a third player control the macro aspect of the game (say scv and buildings) or the way the team wants to organize the different tasks. It will really change the meta game in tournaments. I don’t mean a 3v3 where each player has their own race; That is impossible to cast and I am against that. This will minimize bitching about unbalanced factions. SC2 players bitch so much about OP races, etc. This will also minimize mistakes which really sucks for SC2, you make a small mistake and game over for you.
