Tomb Raider sequel for next-gen is “well into development”

A Tomb Raider sequel for next-gen is “well into development” as part of its re-commitment to triple-A development, according to Square Enix .

A sequel to the game was hinted at during Comic-Con by the Tomb Raider comics series writer Gail Simone, who said the comics would bridge the gap between the last game and its sequel.

The news was posted by Square Enix’s CEO of Europe and North America, Phil Rogers, in an open letter on the firm’s blog, discussing the firm’s commitment to development.

“I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently,” he wrote.

“In the future, we’ll offer gamers more choice, support more platforms and try new things – but we will make sure that whatever the platform, we’ll always keep our focus on raising the quality bar. We feel that is what gamers should expect from a Square Enix game.”

Rogers goes on to say he has spent the last few months “building a senior team in the Americas and Europe,” to support the firm’s new and evolving strategy.

The firm intends to share a fuller title release plan soon on games ranging from “next-gen blockbusters to new cutting-edge tablet and mobile games, to live and online PC games .”

    One of my favourite games for a long time. A Lara Croft that felt real.

    Was not expecting a sequel especially after that article which Square Enix said Tomb Raider did not sell enough even though it sold 1mil+ units in the first month. (Or something along those lines.)

    Glad they saw potential where there is plenty of it.

    Fail, but expected fail. There was absolutely no way they weren’t going to continue with the crap the new “Tomb Raider” pulled, even if the game had bombed. They put too much money into it, and the people behind all the stuff they did are dead set on sticking with it. They’d be putting out “Tomb Raider” stuff as cheap android and iphone games if it came to that just to continue what they forced onto the IP.

    No, we won’t be getting a real Tomb Raider or Lara Croft back for another 10-20 years, most likely the latter, when the next generation deems this version as shitty as or shittier than the current generation pretends the real Lara was. Until then, it’s full steam ahead on a new IP with the names and faces of an existing IP slapped onto it.

    @15: Something being well received does not mean it’s objectively good. It just means it’s well received. The current “reboot” is loaded up with modern gimmicks and trends, hence popular appeal. Ten to twenty years from now, today’s gimmicks and trends will be considered antiquated and in some cases insulting. Cue that generation saying characters made following today’s trends and gimmicks “suck,” cue another reboot to “do it right.”

    It amazes me how much a careless comment from a developer can taint an otherwise great game though.

    The internet straight up exploded when that guy made the rape comment, mainstream media and gaming media alike. Everybody and their moms were jumping to conclusions in print.

    I think it’s pretty unnerving to have played the game and then see those articles again. People well and truly lost their shit, and the extent and volume of the assumptions being made about it were completely absurd, especially considering the fact that Hollywood movies do and have done worse on a regular basis.

    I’m very much a pundit sort-of-guy myself with an opinion on everything, but there’s just something wrong with the system when incomplete information is warped into a complete conclusion on something, and it’s kinda scary when the actual product proves to be the near opposite of what that original genius made it out to be.

    @18 Regardless, there should not be a controversy when a video game contains (but does not endore) a rape in the storyline. This isn’t a controversy when it happens in movies, novels and TV shows. Somehow certain types of fiction are unacceptable when there is a controller in your hand…

    Gaming is a storytelling method now. Rape is a real-world issue often address in other forms of fiction, and gaming should be no different.

    It’s not a very good wind-up. Instead of coming across as someone with a legitimate gripe, you just look like someone who has no idea what’s actually in the game.

    Saying stuff like “It may not be bad now… But wait 20 years” is just desperately grasping for straws, and somehow I think you’re aware of that at this point.

    20 years from now Tomb Raider will still be judged according to the time period it was released in, just like other old games are today.

    There are plenty of things not to like about the game, but you’ve effectively cut yourself off from experiencing them.

    The only complaint I had in regards to that is that there’s a degree of inequity in representation. I’d like to see more male vulnerability, to be honest. And if we’re going to get all of the arse shots and exposed skin for women, then why not for men, too?

    This is one of the reasons I liked Saints Row: The Third, it proves that the issue isn’t sexuality so much, but rather that men get represented in a far, far more dignified way than women. And, yes, you might also say that men are represented in a far more one-dimensional way, too.

    To be honest, what I wouldn’t give to have a game with a gay male character who has vulnerabilities. Of course, knowing how homophobic and insecure the average gamer is, there would be hundreds of shits flipped and jimmies rustled over that. And no triple-A publishing house has the balls to try it, and it hasn’t occurred to any indie to try it either as they’re too busy with other sorts of games (which I’m okay with).

    But yeah, it does paint a poor picture when women are always portrayed as frail (not even vulnerable), and men are always portrayed as indestructible powerhouses. I don’t think that many really complained about her vulnerability, but more that oh, hey, isn’t this a common treatment of women. I suppose it’s even more familiar to me as a comic book reader, because you have artists who openly reference porn and lingerie catalogues for comic books aimed at teenagers.

    I’m used to it, but I don’t like it. If we had more games with men showing skin and acting vulnerable, I’d be okay with it happening to women more. But I’m sorry, Lara wasn’t vulnerable, she had a switch in her head which vaulted her between psychopathic badarse and frail little old lady.

    I WANT feelings in my game, but if Lara Croft and Tomb Raider honestly represent your view of complicated feelings, then I invite you to play more games. Start with the Blackwell Conspiracy, it has a particularly brilliant protagonist who’s also a very believable lady, and not just pervert bait. Imagine that.

    Things are not as equal as women want them to be, believe me.

    The thing is is that women tend to be dismissive of our hobby because they view it as a lost cause. It took me a long time to reverse that perception with the ones I know, and to show instances of being progressive. To most women, we’re hopeless loners, perverts, and douchebags who drool over either seductive and badarse, or overly frail characters who need a daddy figure to protect them.

    Of course, that’s going to make people flip out and act defensively (proving my point), but not many people like hearing the truth. And that very much is the truth.

    So yes, things are far from equal, and Tomb Raider was laughably far from a proper portrayal of a women with feelings.

    Again, if you want that, try the Blackwell games.

    I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though that indie devs manage to get this one right, as they’re more in touch with a more thoughtful and intelligent audience.

    It’s just… it bugs me that that’s the best the mainstream can do. And we actually think that it’s good and laudable when it really isn’t. Can’t we have a character that’s more three-dimensional than what I’ve spoken of? And I really don’t see someone who has a psychotic badarse/frail little girl switch in her head as really three-dimensional.

    I see that as more of a chimera character, built one part of the old Lara Croft, and one part of a six year old girl with abusive parents.

    I think we should want better. Not settle for ‘oh, that’s okay-ish I guess.’

    Their defining women by what they think they should be, and criticising them for actually having a modicum of indentity induced into them.

    Considering salarta’s definition of a good female character in Polaris from X-Men, a character whose entire identity is almost completely defined by her attachment to and mental breakdowns by other men, its hard to take him seriously.

    Salarta’s biggest issue though, is that he obsesses over the inferences, assumptions and allusions, while completely ignoring the factual evidence PUNCHING him in the fact and proving him wrong.

    I’m the one here usually accused of being a white knight. Which is pretty hilarious in itself.

    I go by a very simple metric: use of and respect for the source material. Was she meant to be a tough symbol of female power? Then she should remain exactly that: a tough symbol of female power. If she was meant to be a tough woman at adulthood, that’s exactly what she should be. Anything that can’t respect the source material likewise doesn’t deserve respect.

    Maybe I’d personally want Lara Croft to be a scarred up bitch that stomps balls to get the job done. Maybe I’d personally want Lara Croft to act like a porn star. What I’d personally want is irrelevant. What matters is respect to the source material.

    That’s not to say everything about the source material must be strictly adhered to. Advancement is necessary in some cases. If the Fantastic Four didn’t improve and change over time, for example, Reed Richards would be quite the misogynist. But there’s a difference between changing things because they need changing, and changing things because of petty personal interests. The core of Reed Richards’ character wasn’t about being a misogynist, so that could be changed; if that was the most important facet of his identity, then I’d fully expect it to stay, or at minimum for him to DEVELOP to not being a misogynist. Not rebooted into not being one. Most of what’s happening today is the latter. The only case I can think of off hand in video games where things got changed because they needed to be changed, not because some guy came along and said “This doesn’t fit my personal interests so I must make it fit my personal interests” was Mortal Kombat 9.

    Lara Croft was established as a strong symbol of female power by the time she became an adult. That’s what the source material said she was, and that’s the Lara Croft I support. If she’s being forcibly transformed into a symbol of something completely different from what she was meant to be a symbol of, if she has to be forced as a grown woman to become the tough woman she was always shown as naturally being, then she’s not Lara Croft. She may look like Lara Croft, she may claim Lara Croft’s history, but she’s not Lara, and she never will be.

    I’ll probably be dead by the time the real Lara Croft gets brought back, but it’ll happen at some point. In the meantime, hopefully we’ll get some new female protagonists to fill the space she was kicked out of.

    Not surprised by that, actually. A lot of feminists criticize that as well. White Knights only follow. So of course their mentally will be warped by that. It’s not healthy to say the least.     Considering TheWulf said that he has a rather large following on Tumblr and you know he can only be a white knight. Tumblr is pretty much full of feminists/radical feminists and MRA’s wouldn’t be safe there, neither would they have a large community.

    @41: It’s less “scared them off” and more a case where either I’m writing something, or doing something else like looking at other sites or playing games. I’m willing to debate and argue with people that are open to discussion, but I’m also not going to spend all day on it. There’s no “scaring” me off; either I’m willing to chat with the person because they haven’t said or done something toolish (whether we agree or disagree isn’t a factor), or I ignore the person.

    The typical ways for a person to get me to completely ignore them (and therefore get me to call them an asshole or a tool) are to attack me as a person, twist things I say or care about to make them out to be bad and by extension attack me, or use idiotic and cheap cop-outs to proclaim anything I say has no validity.

    Though I must say in retrospectively looking at my prior post @48, my first paragraph was dickish, sorry about that. Got a bit too defensive there.

    I do hope they fix some of the things that actually needed fixing though.

    One thing that actually did kind of undermine the experience for me was the sheer volume of enemies. I like action as much as the next guy, but towards the end it was really getting tedious, and they fell into the bullet-sponge trap, which never has been, and never will be a worthy replacement for more interesting and intelligent enemies.

    It just means you spend longer doing the exact same thing to take them down. It’s underwhelming.

    It would’ve been so much better with more puzzles and challenges as part of the actual gameplay, rather than constantly gunning down waves of cannonfodder.

    And don’t even get me started on the “supporting” cast… If it had been a Bethesda game I would’ve off’ed every single one for being such a rote fucking cliché :P

    I loved the last Tomb Raider, it was a good way to made the Lara we all now and love it.

    I really loved to see a human side, not a fearless big boobs gun blazing lady. I think Crystal Dynamics did a really nice reboot, and know they can bring all the classic gameplay elements to Tomb Raider.

    I do want to see tears, blood, physical and psychologic violence. All that made Tomb Raider a very good game. Sure they did picked some ideas from Uncharted, but hey, they did the same thing with Tomb Raider. And like i use to say, if you pick an idea to improve your job, well done.

    The only thing they should be worried is about that piece of crap called multiplayer. Camon that was so dull and stupid. Don’t loose time with that.

    Edit: I think next generation is the right place to continue Lara’s adventures

    For God sake make more of the Tombs less about Half Life 2 level of gravity puzzles and more of them like the big windy one. An actual technical challenge combined with trying to figure out how to do the Run/Jump parts in the first place.

    Also play up the hunting aspect, I actually quite enjoy pottering about with my bow eating raw crows or whatever.

    Tomb Raider it was and yet those optional tombs were excuses not actual TOMBS with PUZZLES

    Lara Croft was fine developed but the disparity with the rest of the cast was huge.

    Also there’s always the supernatural theme with every entry in the series but this one had one of the worst.

    Gameplay was aces although they could put more ferocious animals,less humans,less encounters and more acrobatics.It’s Tomb Raider not Uncharted.

    All in all this was a good step forward rebooting the series…but not great.

    They should scrap the MP, and maybe replace it with Co-op. Also, if it was me I’d show Lara to have some psychological scars from her experience on the island. Not make her a total wreck obviously, but maybe guilt, a hallucination here and there. The thing is, Lara’s character was developed really well in the first game but it should not stop there, they should continue developing her character and never have it static. I kinda liked how Lara was standing in a croner, apart from the crew in the last scene. Maybe show that the experiences of the island has made her distant from her past friends and more of a loner? Either way they should somehow continue her character arc, what they started in the first game.

    While I never got time to play the reboot, for what I heard and saw, it wasn’t something I expected from TR, gameplay wise. I hope the next one brings in more puzzles, bigger tombs and more animals.

    Btw, of topic, just a point about cultural differences. Its truly weird how original series (of which I only played anniversary, legend and underworld (a bit), so I am only talking about them ) are now chided for over-sexualization, however new ones are praised for a better storyline involving murder (which is what you do in most games now a days). I am okay with both btw in proper context. After all, they are just stories.

    As I said earlier, I just want the gameplay on old TRs, there isn’t anything like that on markets now.
    My opinion of TR reboot is only based on some videos and forums, so I could be wrong. Sorry if so.

    Would love to see her reflect on her previous experience on the island. I don’t want her to go full PTSD, but there should be something. Maybe some restraint from killing people would be nice?

    Oh and yeah, the MP definitely has to go. Nobody cares. It might have been good, but I never bothered. Poor fuckers who wasted their time working on it.

    I don’t want to get too far into fan fiction territory, but I think remorse would be too cliché. If you kill 500 guys without flinching, then chances are you can live with it afterwards.

    Maybe I’m tainted by reading too much military stuff. It’s only about one or two out of every ten soldiers who can’t live with the people they’ve killed. I definitely see Lara as part of the eight that are okay with it.

    She never killed any civilian so, I guess she’ll be okay with it, but there should be some kind of hint that the past experience still haunts here, be it a little bit of PTSD.

    Nice! Looking forward to a next-gen Tomb Raider. TR’13 is one of the best games I’ve played this year. I liked it better than Max Payne 3, and, at the risk of sounding sacrilegious, perhaps even bettar than Uncharted 2.

Now I’m not familiar with all these terms but isn’t survivor guilt somewhat related to cases like these? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t partly afraid as well, but I’m up front with the cause of my fear. Theirs, on the other hand, comes from a fear that what I and TheWulf say will either 1) cause people to not buy or play the game, or 2) present an alternate viewpoint convincing enough to get others to not see the game the way they want others to see it. They like the game, it fits their personal interests, they want other people to play it and like it.

    I see through it, because I’ve put up with it in many situations over the past half a decade now. I’ve learned to be louder every time they try to make me stop saying what I feel I need to say. They can do all the attacking they want, if they’re that desperate to shut me up, it means I’m saying something that needs to be said. Any claims they make to the contrary just providing even more proof. The last ditch effort tends to be asking for me to be banned.

    Anyway, while we don’t agree on the matter of this specific game, thanks for being one of the reasonable and respectable ones. It’s nice to see someone like you around here. :)
