Kingdom Hearts 3 follows Dream Drop Distance, Nomura discusses combat & tech

Wednesday, 19th June 2013 12:52 GMT By Dave Cook

Kingdom Hearts 3 is a proper sequel that follows Nintendo 3DS romp Dream Drop Distance, and will conclude the ‘Dark Seeker’ saga, according to director Tetsuya Nomura.

Speaking with Famitsu, Nomura confirmed that the game will pick up right where Dream Drop Distance left off, and will follow the final battle against Xehanort. He added that right now, the team is still figuring out which Disney worlds to include in the plot.

On combat, Nomura said, “We have a demo version running on the actual hardware, but the action’s pretty frantic. The really bold action we’ve always had is getting even crazier. Kingdom Hearts 3 has three-person parties, but NPCs and other characters join the fight in each individual world, and the resulting action is really flashy and exciting. The enemy AI is a lot more intricate, too, and I think the gameplay will reflect that new dynamic balance. For example, there’s a foe that’s shaped like a vehicle, and Sora may jump on it and fly around; that’s already implemented.”

Nomura also has his hands full on Final Fantasy 15, and he stressed that both that team and the Kingdom Hearts 3 team are well aware of each other’s efforts, “The FF15 and KH3 teams are aware of each other. They’re constantly honing their work at this point in development. Even though KH3 is still pretty early in development, it’s already producing some great scenes in Square Enix’s internal conferences. We’re discussing new developments never seen in any KH before, so keep an eye on further updates.”

Those “further updates” may come at this year’s Tokyo Games Show, Nomura suggested, but stressed that it’s too early to say for sure. The game will launch on PS4 and Xbox One.

Meanwhile, check out Nomura’s discussion about why Final Fantasy 13 Versus shifted to Final Fantasy 15.

Thanks Polygon.

But please SE, put a playable version of DDD in KH 2.5 HD Remix, don’t make me buy a 3DS just for that game.

Did they ever explain why they skipped the current gen homeconsoles in favour of portable titles until now?

Soooo… it will be entirely inexplicable to people who haven’t played Dream Drop Distance? Aren’t they limiting their potential audience just a tad?

@6: My thoughts exactly. Seems like a very poorly thought out idea. Hopefully somebody there will realise that.

@6 I’ve been playing since the first game and I barely know what the fuck is going on with that story half the time. Kingdom Heart’s plot makes Kojima look like a talented wordsmith in comparison.

This has been an issue with the franchise since Chain of Memory. This is hard new to KH3.

@8 I guess its now a tradition for the numbered installments since they pulled the exact same crap with KH2 alright.

And no i had no clue what the hell was going on in KH2′s intro either since i did not even know Chain of memory’s existed until someone told me.

Come on, you guys know that he’s going to put 3D either as an HD release or it’ll be part of 2.5HD. It all depends on whether or not KH3 will be ready in 2015 or 2016.

    Remember, he’s said that
    1) that he wants a Kingdom Hearts title out every year until KH3 is ready. 1.5HD is 2013′s title.
    2) He wanted everyone to be caught up on the story, by putting it all in one place (the PS3) so that KH3 will be clear to everyone.

    So, either he plans on release 1.5HD (2013), 2.5HD (2014), 3D (2015), KH3 (2016) or 1.5HD (2013), 2.5HD (w/3D as part of it) (2014), and then KH3 (2015).

I actually had the same problem with KH2 because I had never played CoM, so I was overjoyed to hear that they’re taking all the portable titles and putting them on PS3.

I hope it’s the latter version of the HD Collection, with DDD included in the bundle.

But does Nintendo hold any rights for the game? I would really like to see the 2.5HD Collection for the Vita.

@11 – Fuck having them on Vita. Splitting them up leaves us in exactly the same place as we were before. Might as well have stayed on 3DS if we’re going to put shit on Vita because people like me who only play consoles, who are the entire focus of the HD Collections, still wouldn’t be able to play them.

As for Nintendo holding rights, why would they? Nomura actually had considered completely remaking 385/5 Days for PS3, instead of just having the cutscenes, but he didn’t have enough time.

So, I would prefer 3D gets its own release, instead of being on 2.5HD. Because if it is its own release, it’ll be playable. If they squeeze it onto the 2.5HD Collection, where they’re already making Birth By Sleep playable, then there’s a good chance it’ll only be the cutscenes from 3D.

Yeah, I get your point. I would like to see HD collections for the PS Vita like the FF X/X2 one, that’s all. :P
