PS4: publishers decide if free-to-play multiplayer requires PS Plus

Thursday, 13th June 2013 06:29 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Not every multiplayer PlayStation 4 game will require PlayStation Plus; when it comes to free-to-play publishers will have the choice, and Sony Online Entertainment has decided against it.

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news with Polygon.

“As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it’s a publisher’s decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements,” he said.

The news came following word that Sony Online Entertainment’s two PlayStation 4 MMOs, DC Universe Online and Planetside 2, won’t require PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

Both games will allow PS3 and PS4 players to play together on a single server.

We’ve fired off a couple of urgent queries on the subject of whether subscription MMOs will require a PlayStation Plus account; on Xbox Live, the only comparable console subscription service, an unpaid Silver account will do for games like Final Fantasy 11.

Fascinating news. Sony’s conference left the impression that all games required a PS+ subscription, but it may get some people to buy the system if they know that they may be able to play some online games without a PS+ subscription after all.

Wait, I don’t get it: I thought all multiplayer was going to need a PS+ subscription (that sucked). Is it not true?

This definitely needs clarification. I guess they are only talking about free to play games, as Jack Tretton seemed quite clear on the fact that in order to play multiplayer, you’d have to be a PS+ member from now on.

sony do that becase they use their server,so how they say its too expensive.where is mmo,i think its mmo server,so they let to decide to mmo owner.

PS+ maybe take with one hand, but with another give it back.i saved a lot of money by having PS+,so its just your mind who blocks all this idea :)

    1) my understanding is that online multilayer gaming is actually done between consoles (like p2p). Therefore you already paid for the right to play online multiplayer games if you paid for your internet. The console manufacturers have no right to make up a fake fee.

    2) if you dont believe the above is true, lookup patent US6069896.pdf.

    3) the whole point of the ‘internet’ is that you pay for your own internet connection to connect with other computers. YOU DONT PAY FOR THE OTHER PERSONS INTERNET AND COMPUTERS TOO!!!

I just wont purchase a ps4 or xbox 1 FULLSTOP. If consumers support these businesses doing this, then it is like selling ice to the Ice to the Eskimos. (you all ready paid for the console, your internet connection, the game) To play online costs very little – they are just relying on consumer ignorance to rip you off.

PLEASE Consider abandoning gaming consoles until they allow you to use your internet (WHICH YOU ALL READY PAID FOR) for playing online games.
