Killer Instinct reboot is free-to-play, only one character is free

Tuesday, 11th June 2013 10:26 GMT By Dave Cook

Killer Instinct is getting a reboot on Xbox One, courtesy of Double Helix Games . Good news: it’s free-to-play. Potential bad news: you have to pay for every character, except Jago.

Destructoid confirmed in this Killer Instinct preview, that while the fighter is free to all, you have to pay individually for new and returning characters. That’s a payment per character, but the specific cost has not been confirmed, so don’t start worrying just yet, as they could be dirt cheap.

Characters have two life bars just like in the original games, and big combos and Combo-Breakers are back. The game’s out at the Xbox One launch.

What do you make of the above? Also, why not check out some new Killer Instinct trailer and screens here?

Come on MS, what the fuck is this shit?!
Is there a problem to make this into a retail game or downloadable title on Xbox live?

Freemium will be a new plague for consoles as there are for the PC. On the flipside blacklight & war frame both of which I play on steam are solid games even if there menu’s read like a Michelin star restaurant (item pricing)

“give us money if you want other players.”

That would make sense, given that the game is FREE.

If there are, say, only 11 characters ~(inc Jago) and it’s $5 per character, the game would still be cheaper than a $60 box product with all characters purchased.

I’d rather hear more concrete news before bashing it.

@7 Only 12 characters was great in the 90′s, but not anno 2013. How many fighters had Mortal Kombat 9?

LOL whats the difference!!? You can still pay 70 dollars for the bloody game if you want too! Its an arcade title at best so why would you be mad that they are letting you play free and maybe $3.00 dollars a character!?
At the end its going to be a cheaper game and yet people whine!
I think its more the fans that are killing xbox than Microsoft.

Killer Instinct 3 never needed to be F2P, it would have made a fortune. This is just unadulterated mega greed.

Yes, because making games free and selling content at ‘as yet undefined’ prices is WELL greedy. Even if it works out cheaper than $60 all in.

My interest for the new Killer Instinct died when I heard the makers of Green Lantern Rise of the Manhunters and Silent Hill Homecoming were doing it.

KI was my most anticipated game on Xbone… The one thing that even AFTER Sony presser was still linger in my mind. No longer. Good luck with your f2p fighter.

Seriously, WTF is going on here? Tekken, DOA and now KI (At least the first 2 got to shine as a proper game before entering the F2P market. KI was made WITH F2P in mind)

@18, study up and you’ll find out that today’s F2P measures are all about being greedy.

Pass efforts have already shown that ala carte makes more money than a one price meal.

In the beginning of modern F2P, it was used to gain a larger audience for lack luster games in the hope of turning a profit from big fish, but a AAA awaited title title like KI3 already had a built in audience which means they did not need a F2P scheme to make money.

One can only conclude then that if a game doesn’t need F2P to make money, then the use of F2P is only being used to make even more money.

so they have this new d-pad which looks great for fighters, they even have an arcade stick for the game, they have the rebirth of this great fighter…and then they make this f2p? they should know the fighting community a little bit better. ms has lost it. it is unbelieveable really. one facepalm hunts the next and it really does not stop, does it? they really thought they could get away with all this and people would even applaud them. i still can´t believe all this tbh.

This wouldn’t be a problem… if the game didn’t look like a piece of outdated garbage.

  26. Biscuitpants

fuck the f2p shit, this game isnt being made by rare wtf man

    #26 2 years ago
  27. WENDiGO

You have the right to bash them at this point…the point is you shouldn’t have to pay for EVERY other character on a “free to play” game. Its not the price, its the fact that you shouldn’t have to do that. They really shouldn’t call it free to play then.
