Warcraft movie: Life of Pi Oscar winner signs as VFX director

Friday, 26th April 2013 05:26 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Bill Westenhofer has signed on as visual effects director for the Warcraft movie, fresh from winning a 2013 Academy Award for Life of Pi.

Blizzard executive Nick Carpenter announced the news via Twitter, commenting that he had had his first meeting with Westenhofer and the film is “in good hands”.

Westenhofer is a visual effects supervisor at Rhythm and Hues Studios. His work has appeared in a wide variety of works, including The Golden Compass, which won a Bafta and Academy Award in 2008; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which was Oscar-nominated; Men in Black 2; Stuart Little; and much more.

The long stymied cinematic project seems to be making progress at last. The long wait on the project saw the exit of director Sam Raimi, who later said Blizzard has “mismanaged” the negotiations. Moon director Duncan Jones, a self-described fan of the property, stepped up to take his place, and rumour has it Johnny Depp may be on board, although we’ve heard nothing official.

Thanks, Player Attack.

Oh that’s rich. Which VFX company are they going to force bankruptcy on this time?

Get the facts straight before posting. THe company went bankrupt because they kept undercutting in their bids for contracts which forced the company to overwork their employees with ridiculous amount of overtime in order to keep it afloat.

Manufacturers use the same tactics and that is why they have fled out of the US because it was becoming too costly.

He’s the ridiculous sidekick that gets more screen time than heroes and is also the biggest name on the poster.

Either that or they will just put some green makeup on his face and make him the cheerfully funny Thrall.

My facts are straight. The fact that one of the most talented studio in the industry went bankrupt and was hushed up trying to reach out, is perfectly straight. Learn some respect before you post. This conversation ends here.

Yes your words are solid. You need to look it up saying your facts are straight doesn’t prove it so. Show me an article where it says that Rhythm was not closed by their own mismanagement. I have read articles upon articles and all of them pointed at them doing to themselves by undercutting other bidders for jobs which means that they would have to do more work just to keep their employees and the studio alive. Its the snake eating its own tail in order to sustain itself. It doesn’t work.

The Golden Compass, The Chronicles of Narnia, Men in Black 2,…all movies that relied too much on computer generated imagery and that imo ended up looking like crap. I was hoping that for the WC movie they would foccus mainly on make-up art, but now I’m afraid that that won’t happen…
