Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon screenshots show the game’s love of neon

Ubisoft has released some screenshots for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. They’re very “neon”. Check them out below. Some look familiar, some not. I can’t tell anymore. Older shots can be found here as well. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is due on Xbox Live Arcade and other formats on May 1.

Okay. You win, Ubisoft. I may actually have to give this a go. I’ve been looking more for the Saints Row III kind of cartoon “violence” lately. I guess I’m just really, really fed up of shooting uncanny valley men and running from animals that come so close to reality that I don’t want to harm them.

Anyone else feel that way? That the focus on realism just means it isn’t fun any more? There have been some exceptions, like the obvious Saints Row, superhero games like the Amazing Spider-Man, and the really bloody out there guns of Mass Effect (BioWare had far, far too much fun with that)…

In fact, I like Mass Effect. I’ll say that time and again. The guns are silly, there’s no gore, and it’s as detached from reality as it can be. I felt the same way about Fallout 3/NV, and that feeling doubled when people started making stun rounds for my favourite retro-future guns.

Even better though was the gauss gun of Fallout 1/2, which modders brought back. That gun amused me greatly with its built-in monitor shenanigans. If that wasn’t taking the piss out of future weaponry, I don’t know what is. But I digress.

I like the silly, cartoon violence. There’s so much realism in games these days though that I’m almost starting to resent games in general. If not for modders, I don’t think I’d have been able to enjoy Skyrim at all, even remotely. But there’s just so much silly fun to be had with the mods for that game.

Maybe that should tell game developers something? When 60% of the mods for a game are silly? That this fetish for realism just maybe isn’t that popular any more?

So yes. I might have to give this a spin. If it wasn’t standalone, it’d have no chance, since Far Cry 3 itself is as guilty as anything is. And I’m not going to start killing critters to make wallets. That crosses my vomit line of being repugnant, sorry. Since it’s standalone, though…

Oh my god, I remember this scene from a Youtube video that sadly was taken down:

I laughed so damn hard when that he said that. You really didn’t see it coming.
