US games sales decline to continue until GTA 5, next-gen systems are released

Wednesday, 17th April 2013 20:37 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia expects NPD figures for March 2013 to be down by 10-15% when the numbers are reported tomorrow.

Speaking in an industry note, the analyst doesn’t expect the sector to show any improvement until GTA 5 and the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft are released.

Bhatia expects Bioshock Infinite to be the big seller for the month, estimating its sell-through somewhere around the 700,000 and 750,000 mark on both PS3 and Xbox 360.

Brenna will bring you the full NPD report tomorrow once it hits.

Thanks, Gamespot.

GTA 5 has the power to increase US games sales, if only if there was a next generation version.

    Let’s see:

    - Super prolonged console gen with aging hardware.
    - Annualized franchises that shouldn’t be annual like AC with samy sequels
    - Forced multiplayer and other dumb aspects in hopes of fighting second hand

Of course a new hardware + a NON-annualized mega-sequel like GTA5 can change the tide. The main question is whether or not they will join forces (As in, GTA5 for PS4 and Xbox 3 with extra features).

Next gen is a must. In reality next gen should be released since 2010 but that 10 year life cycle made everything worse for console manufacturers.
but hey, we got Call Of duty every year with the same old shit.

At least thanks for my PC that had interesting new games + kickstarter and of course great visuals.

I hope The Last Of Us will sell as good as Infinite, probably not because its not multiplatform :(

@7 Don’t be so pessimistic :) I know three people alone that want TLoU that are not into Infinite. One being myself and two being friends of mine that get motion sickness from fps’s. There’s always hope ;)

    @6: FTL.

@7: Well how much did Infinite sell? Under 2 mil on consoles? Last of Us is new, yes, but it’s still a Naughty Dog Game and the last Naughty Dog Game sold 5.8 Mil. copies.

The setting is also much more accessible than Columbia and it looks like the gameplay as well as the story is going to be better.

” but it’s still a Naughty Dog Game and the last Naughty Dog Game sold 5.8 Mil. copies.”

That was with a brand name, Uncharted which everyone that has a PS3 knows about. THis is a completely new IP and most gamers don’t look for the studio behind the game also survival horror games typically don’t do as well as action games.

i think gta5 will be on all consoles, i mean i know its a highly complex game that prolly needed more time but really 4 almost 5 months… and close to next gen. c’mon its gonna be on ps4 and the next xbox. for people who are not sure that want to buy another xbox or a ps4. will be like OMG GTA5 is on the new xbox? and the store will say yes and automatic buy. theres only been two games ive liked so far, injustice gods among us and Tomb raider (reboot)

@10: Not sure about that. I think Naughty Dog has delivered enough games to be some kind of seal of quality. And even if they didn’t know them by name, gameplay footage was all it took to convince them.

“survival horror games typically don’t do as well as action games.”

That is true, but as games like DayZ and Dark Souls have proven: There’s a huge market for it.

Never thought of Day Z or Dark SOuls as survival horror.

One is a sandbox zombie game with MP and another is a hard core dungeon crawler neighter of which neither are scary other than the fact of getting your ass handed to you because of a mistake.

They are survival horror games. They have the few ingredients necessary to put them in the genre.

Survival: If you fail at managing your resources, you will die.

Survival and Horror: You can die pretty fast if you don’t pay attention.

Horror: You might not find them scary, but that doesn’t matter. I think Scary Movie is boring, it’s still a Horror Movie.

    The end.

Er, no. Scary Movie is a comedy. The fact that it parodizes horror movies doesn’t make it a horror movie. That’s like calling Borat a political documentary.

“I think Scary Movie is boring, it’s still a Horror Movie.”

No, no, and no. SO any arguments you have made have now all become invalid.

BTW both games have not done spectacular numbers which knowing SOny they want at least 3 million at launch. Dark souls took a year to get to its 2 million and DayZ is free with a game that has gone on sale on PC multiple times for less than 30$.
