Dark Souls 2 release on next-gen was discussed, new engine nixes frame rate issues

From Software had discussed bringing Dark Souls 2 to next-gen platforms, but decided current-gen had a larger demand for it.

Speaking with CVG, producer Yui Tanimura said if the game had been developed for next-gen, it would have taken longer to get the game in people’s hands.

“We wanted to deliver something to fans as soon as possible,” he said. “We still feel there’s potential and ability for us to express a little bit more than what we did with Dark Souls, even on current-gen consoles. We hope to stay on current consoles, but express a little bit more, and elaborate on what we were able to communicate with Dark Souls.

“Right now there’s no intent to have Dark Souls on next-gen.”

Tanimura also said that the new game engine created for the title should all but stamp out any frame rate issues inherent in the previous titles, and was created specifically to address the issue.

Dark Souls 2 is expected on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late 2013 or early 2014.

    So glad to hear they also fixed the frame rate issues. That is the last part of the puzzle. I want this game now.

    I think with next gen and engines like Cry engine 3 and Unreal 4, developers will loose less time on creating inferior engine and actually focusing on game.

    According to another recent interview, it is. Actually, PC is the lead platform. The footage shown was from PC where the game will run at 60 frames while consoles get 30fps with the promise of no huge dips.

    Honestly though, outside a few sections of Blighttown, I didn’t have any problems with frame rate (At least the PS3 version).

    @7: When it drops into the single digits and becomes unplayable. Especially if the game we play demands precise input.

    Personally, this news is bitter sweet for me. I was really hoping to play a next gen Dark Souls game in 2014. With that said, I’m fine with a current gen version. If the much larger XBox and PS3 instal base affords the devs more sales, that only increases the chances of me playing a next gen Dark / Demon Souls at some point.

    @5 that’s awesome to hear! yeah, I’ve been wanting to get the pc version but always ended up missing the steam/amazon sales.
