God of War: Ascension trophy to be renamed following criticism

SCE Santa Monica has confirmed it will alter the name of one of God of War: Ascension’s trophies after an early review raised concerns.

Speaking to Joystiq, a representative for the developer confirmed that the trophy formerly known as “Bros Before Hos” will be renamed “Bros Before Foes”.

“We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game,” the rep said in a statement.

“We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we’ve addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question.”

Concerns over the trophy were raised by Adam Sessler in a video review and are two-fold; first, the word “ho” is a sexist slur, and second, the trophy is awarded after Kratos commits a fairly brutal act of violence against a female character. In the context of the story the scene makes sense, but the celebratory trophy, which makes a point of highlighting the genders of the characters involved while invoking a slur, makes it all feel a little slimy.

The update will roll out at God of War: Ascension’s launch, which is March 12 in the US, March 13 in Europe, March 14 in Australia and March 15 in the UK.

Damn I hate these fucking crybabies… Just because they don’t like something everybody must pay. FUCK YOU! The world was not made just for you assholes!

If you don’t like the game because of this then just don’t play it and let people that have different opinion and belief than you enjoy the game like it was meant to be!

what is anyone losing by a renamed trophy? who´s the real crybaby here? good call ssm. right choice to rename and patch it. i can understand why people feel offended by the term hoe. would you like to see a a trophy you´ll get for killing a black guy named: no mo niggas? or a trophy of killing an moslem named: died for the wrong god
i want to see more of this happening. i for one do not want racist/sexist bullshit in the games i buy.
it´s good if devs think this stuff through more. noone is taking anything away from anyone…

Edit:

@JPRACER: “The world was not made just for you assholes!”
again, not someone who feels offended by an offensive word is egoistic to point it out. it´s easy FOR YOU not to feel offended by the word hoe because you clearly aren´t a women but that´s a pretty egoistic point of view man. the world wasn´t just made for you you know…

@Orbit: it´s a difference to make these jokes in real life, to people who know you and can react directly to it, even in a forum/webpage where people can react to it and tell their point of view. i think that´s even a good thing. the trophy and game content in general, is forced at you though, you cannot react to it directly. no chance for disagreeing or discussion. so it´s much more offensive and it´s good if devs are aware of this and try to avoid it or change it if they realise they made a mistake.

I’m offended by needless, reactionary censorship. Having said that, this whole thing seems to have been blown way out of proportion. Changing the name of this trophy in no way affects the game, and I don’t care about trophies anyway, so my not giving a shit about this is two-fold. Even so, regarding Mr. Sessler and his delicate sensibilities, I’d encourage anyone so easily offended by vulgar slang to seek employment outside the video game industry…and media. My students say worse on a daily basis, and they’re 10.

^ it has been blown out of proportion. so much so that i even think it just could have been a marketing trick.
that said, i really believe it´s a good thing to be aware of these things in developing a game and if needed, change stuff, fix it, that´s what a patch is for, totally legit to rename a trophy if you as a dev realise you made a mistake…what the internet makes of that is a different story.

i do not think this has anything to do with censorship, i mean look at the rest of the game….:)
censorship sucks, in this case though the devs just realised that they made a mistake and fixed it theirselves. that´s not censorship, that´s just a good and brave choice.
you know, you´re students saying worse things doesn´t make it right. in fact that even is the problem. people /kids start to think it´s ok to be offensive. this changes if they really have a face to face discussion…it´s always funny to witness. i can witness this in my job almost every day. how people scream and shout if they think they are anonymous and how polite and shy they are if they are forced to have a real face to face discussion with someone they devalued just minutes before…

I cannot believe this has gotten blown out of proportion. It just a game and a virtual trophy that means nothing. People are really just overactiving because of a name of a trophy which i find funny which happens after you commit violence against a women, also this trophy’s name was suggested by a women at Santa Monica Studio. This is God of War for FFS.

@50 I don’t think it will be optional if you plan to play the online multiplayer. I for one, am not patching it, till I get my Bros before Hoes trophy. Because fuck them that’s why!

The irony here is guys blaming Adam Sissler for blowing things out of proportion… Thousands of guys… If not hundreds of thousands… All whining like butthurt little bitches… Over the renaming of a trophy…

Not a cut-scene, not a change in gameplay, not a removal of a character, the change of ONE letter…

Well keep tight hold of your threatened little nutsacks boys, cuz this is gonna happen more & more often. The days of gaming, being the jolly little frathouse & no girls allowed, is over!

Now keep calm & carry on. Your all acting like hysterical women :-P

@polygem Well, I guess we disagree on a few things. I think this is absolutely a case of censorship (albeit tiny, selective censorship)–someone at SSM thought it might be a bit funny or hip to give the trophy that name, some people disagreed, and they bowed to the pressure. I don’t think that’s brave, I think it’s merely trying to avoid negative press. The brave thing to do would have been to stand their ground, and say, “We understand why some people would find this offensive, but we are keeping the name the way it is.”

You’re right, there is no shortage of “objectionable” material in GOW, but that’s the nature of the beast, if you start being swayed by every little problem someone has with it, where does it stop? How might that change the way the next GOW is developed? I know this trophy name is a very minor thing, not even part of the game per se, but I think you know what I mean.

I don’t think the trophy name was particularly “wrong” to begin with, at least least not wrong enough to warrant all this kerfuffle.

As far as my students, English is not their first language, so most of them don’t even know what they’re saying really means. They’re just repeating what they heard somewhere because they think it’ll get a laugh out of their friends. The ones that say those things are generally very low level, so unfortunately, I can’t sit down with them and have a detailed conversation about why those phrases are offensive. I tend to ignore them because it is not very frequent and never directed at anyone in an aggressive fashion. If they KNEW it was offensive then they might start saying it all the time :) Besides, I don’t agree with teaching that certain words are “bad” (then we’d be back to censorship of language) there are only inappropriate times to use them.

I think it’s more to do with fears of PC backlash than sexism stuff. The world is PC crazy after all.

I wouldn’t refuse to buy/patch the game, doing that makes you just as bad as the people who’d rant about the original name – because you’re also overreacting over something trivial.

Not that I really do care about what the trophy is named (don’t care about trophies either).

But I think it’s a little sad that it got changed, I mean. Who the fuck gives a damn if it’s named “Bros before hos”.

NO ONE playing the game will be offended by this.

@Digital B.: i always respect your opinion- also in this discussion. i see where you are coming from and that argument is legit as well. it´s a mater of perspective i guess.
this tiny, little trophy thing is making some waves though. this shows me that it is indeed kind of relevant. some litle things do indeed count and can make a difference. i think we should all reflect a little more about our daily life behaviour, how we interact with each other. i think it´s cool if a dev takes a step back if they really think that what they´ve done was wrong, that it´s a message they don´t want to spread. if they just do it to avoid bad press or because of political correctness pressure, that´s not so cool though. in the end also bad press can be very good marketing, especially in this case. i really start to believe we all just stepped into a very clever and cheap marketing campaign :)
there´s a huge sexism debate in germany atm, and it was the ´day of the women´ (do you call it like that? you know what i mean), just a few days ago, making sexism a topic in almost every western countries for a few days…now this. kind of helps to get attention, just in time for the release of the game. hmmmmmm…..

What boggles my mind is just how fucking ignorant and stupid some of the comments are. There is Youtube. Go there, look for the scene.

This is not the first time Kratos kills a female monster or even a woman. Kratos is pretty much unbiased. There is nothing he hasn’t killed already. So why is it suddenly misogynistic? Are you people mentally challenged?

@YZ,
+1000

Play chains of Olympus. He smashes the Persian kings face, then has a sex mini-game with “his women”.
Sessler is really a 9 year old facing mid-life crisis. Looks like he needed an excuse for a poor score as he couldn’t even finish the game by himself.
Really, he points out in games negatives- “One trophy is named XYZ.” That is a ridiculous negative, and that is for something that doesn’t affect gameplay, story, graphics, music, lasting appeal, anything.

Even more funny is how some ignorant “knights in armor” jumped on the topic even when they don’t even know the context.
Internet just loves controversies…

This is all good, if gaming was the same as 20 years ago there would be no passionate discussions and many wouldn’t possibly know what to do with their time, let alone what to fight for.

They ‘re trying to take away out freedom. Fight for your entertainment now. We need mature games with sex mini games for mature deprived patients.

How many guys in here wish they could be a ho(e)? :D and lets be honest how many females here are closet ho(e)s. I think the trophy would invoke a grin or smile after you get it not rage. The update should be optional that replaces your PS+ golden emblem next to your avatar with a pink ribbon. I like the Bro before Ho name.

Do the Homie Kratos haters ;)

So a MALE reviewer dislikes a trophy name & expresses this…

I’m betting the GUYS at Santa Monica saw this & thought “He’s got a point”.

Result? Lots of BOYS getting their nuts in a twist over feminists stealing their gaming freedom…

Estimated WOMEN actually involved… Zero, zip, zilch.

Funny that.

Hoes are good for getting rid of those pesky deep rooted weeds, but they’ll never come round and watch the football with you.

I point it out because I’m sick of people that want to control what I can and cannot see and do and remove my freedom and the freedom of the creative people behind the product.

If you don’t like it, don’t play it, you have a choice but what you’re trying to do is remove my choice, you’re the egoist. Because you don’t like something, then everybody shouldn’t be allow to see it… Fuck you!

And about the “it´s easy FOR YOU not to feel offended by the word hoe because you clearly aren´t a women”…

Are you a woman? No?

Just shut the fuck up!

ps: And it’s a woman that came up with that trophy name!

the “creative people behind the product” changed it because they realised they made a mistake. it´s totally legit and it is their choice. not yours. not mine. noone is removing your freedom in this case. not even close. all i am saying is that i think it´s cool that they thought about it twice, realised it might have been a bad idea and removed it. i think that´s a good thing, i think it´s always good to stand up for your mistakes and it´s always a good thing to stand up against sexist bs everywhere. you think it´s not, but, no matter how you turn this: it´s not taking any freedom of choice away from you…that´s taking this a bit too far isn´t it?

About the trophy you’re right I’m taking it pretty far, but it’s about principle because I think they change it because they were forced to, not because they wanted to.

And sorry if I was a little hard on you, this can really get to me fast!
