“The console is just a console”: Sony explains lack of PS4 hardware during reveal

Thursday, 21 February 2013 08:41 GMT By Dave Cook

PS4 was revealed last night at a Sony event in New York City, but the console itself was nowhere to be seen. Shuhei Yoshida, president of worldwide studios at Sony Computer Entertainment has explained that the console itself is considered as less important than the DualShock 4, and therefore wasn’t shown.

Speaking with Polygon, Yoshida said, “The console is just a box. The controller was very important to show because it has the share button, but the console is just a console.”

When asked if the press would see the final PS4 rig at E3 2013, Yoshida replied, “We’re still trying to decide that.”

With the console releasing ‘Holiday 2013′ you would like to think that the rig will be shown in full at E3 at least.

What do you think?

Meanwhile, catch up on the PS4′s specs right here.

Thats the new Thing, Showing Controller but not the Console, just like Nintendo. I wonder If MS will do it too.

But I don’t really care, as long as it don’t look ugly under my TV I don’t care about the Look of the Console.

    #2 2 years ago
  3. alimokrane

Bullshit! it simply was not ready to show, that’s all. Are you telling me they are willing to give up the PR they get out of showing their machine? Come on! The machine is simply not finalised. it’s clear Sony wanted to announce something before MS does, that’s all. The machine’s final look is clearly not ready yet.

  4. Dave Cook

The guy is right, there’s no new innovation on the surface of the box. The controller is the big innovation this time. Why show what is essentially a black slab with inputs and maybe a light or two. It would have been underwhelming compared to DualShock 4.

    #4 2 years ago
  5. manamana

@3 we all know that. And the bottom line is: the box doesn’t matter.

    #5 2 years ago
  6. Samoan Spider

Well it won’t stay secret for long. You can bet that someone will snap and post it. So many more people will have to be on board for the line up to launch that security won’t be 100% airtight. They should’ve shown it and I don’t buy this ‘the controller is more important’ bit (as in agreeing with #3 on this). To the fickle consumer, it is not going to be the primary selling point in relation to the hardware.

    #6 2 years ago
  7. salarta

I disagree with Yoshida’s statement that the console itself is less important than the controller, BUT I think that not revealing the look of the console tonight was a good idea. It gets people excited about the possibilities of the system instead of the physical space, when if people saw its size, they might become too obsessed with complaining about it being too big, or not big enough, and that could eclipse discussing the things that matter most.

It’s also a good idea not to show the console yet so they can show it off at a later date, possibly E3. I think it may be beneficial for Sony to show off the look of their console after Microsoft shows theirs.

One thing I notice, though, is how someone in charge at Sony said they would wait for Microsoft to reveal first so other companies couldn’t get a leg up on innovation, only to turn around and reveal PS4 before Microsoft revealed their next console. Granted, I think the decision to announce tonight was actually the right way to go, but that stood out for me.

“willing to give up the PR they get out of showing their machine?”

Or save it for another time maybe? Probably not finalised but they need to spread the hype it’s a long way to go before release.

  9. fengato

Sony wanted to have something left to tease us for E3. It’ll be there.

I found the whole conference to be a bit halfbaked – would have greatly preferred a later event that truly put all they had on to the table.

    #9 2 years ago
  10. Dave Cook

@8 are people not hyped after last night?

If not then that’s a shame, because even if people won’t be buying PS4, the reveal also suggests what the new Xbox will be like. They will be similar in spec and connectivity.

To me last night set a precedent for all next-gen formats. I’m excited.

    @10

That’s the Internet in a nutshell Dave, many people ask for how the conference should be, get a very close turn out, then complain!
This conference (for me) focused on “The Games” no Fraff’in about, 10mins in and we heard the words PS4, that was awesome.

I for one, agree with the smart logical commenters on the fact that you’d need to spread this whole reveal throughout the year. It would of been a mistake to announce price before MS, that’s a business play 101 .
    That is called, being smart.

Loved every min of lastnights showing. I really did. 8Gb of DDR RAM OMFG!!!!!!!! Insane!!!!!!!

And I agree. A box, is simply a fuckin’ box. How special will It be.. Come on.

    @12 +1000

It was a great reveal. very strong. Gaikai is what I’m most excited about as it will be an integral thought process for the generation after PS4, once we scrap physical discs.

I think it’s so crucial to watch cloud streaming very closely from now on. To write it off as a joke is a big mistake.

  14. DrDamn

    @10
I’m excited! Though bracing myself for a 2014 release date in EU. Not sure exactly what people expected of a reveal this far ahead of release. It did exactly what was needed. Good mix of new IP and revamped existing IP. Nice set of specs and features and a great focus throughout on games.

  15. Goffee

Sure, the actual tacky plastic box isn’t important, but the perception of being on the ball, in light of how other tech launches go, is pretty high on the list, and Sony doesn’t seem quite there.

Imagine if Apple had launched the first iPhone with no product to show…. folk would have dismissed it as all talk. As a perception issue, Sony has ignored that people like an iconic image to hang their hopes around, and a slightly modified controller isn’t it.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. Myth

I think it hurt Sony quite a bit not to show the console last night. The diehards are always going to be tuned in and watching, we’ll be there no matter what they show. But coverage outside the gaming press needs visuals and they aren’t there – I checked three mainstream media sources today, and could find PS4 on one of them, way down the page.

Maybe they can recoup that with a reveal of the actual console later.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. KAP

    @15&16

Dude, this is the first time PS4 was uttered by Sony, you and the world will get your box you so crave, hell, you know there is one, so just wait until E3.

We got more then we could of asked for lastnight. As gamers were all thinking about the next thing as where consuming new info.. Fuck me.

    Like little gremlins. lol

GDC, GamesCom, E3,PAX, Japan Games Show? My point is we’re in feb man, this thing isn’t out til the end of the year. Lets spread this stuff out a little, my head is still blown by gaikai, let alone everything else.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. dizzygear

The design of the box is pretty damn important if you ask me. The Xbox 1 was a laughing stock for being ridiculously huge and ugly.

I hope they wont come up with another curved design so i cant put things on top of it. And for the love of god NO PIANO BLACK.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Gadzooks!

I couldn’t care less about what the box looks like. The controller, games and OS improvements are all that matters right now.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. salarta

There’s another aspect to revealing the look of the console that hasn’t been addressed. Sony announced the technical specs, and several games, and now people know the PS4 is on the way. But as we see with several comments, people are obsessed with the look, and have very specific demands about how it should look, like the “no curved design and no piano black” suggestion.

As I already mentioned, not showing the console’s look gets people to discuss the things that actually matter most and not immediately write off the console for not looking the way they want it to look. But alternately, the kind of people that do obsess over the console’s design will be spending the next few months talking endlessly about what they do and do not want in a design. This kind of commentary will allow Sony to modify or change their design to fit what it seems like a majority of people would be most comfortable with as a design.

Edit: Though I hope they handle the Store better than the latest “update” they made to PSN. That thing looks “slick” but functionality-wise, it’s ass compared to what PSN used to be like.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. Dave Cook

@18 yeah the Xbox looked ugly, but you could put its insides into a shoe box and the games would still be the same.

It really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. TheBlackHole

I was disappointed with the showing last night. By splitting the reveal between this and E3 I feel like they’ve spread their offering too thin, having to show 12 month old tech demos and images of what ‘might be’ in the future. Hell, even the Gaikai stuff was barely at concept phase.

The specs of the machine are great. If MS have less Ram or use GDDR3 instead of 5, there’s going to be some distance between the machines.

In terms of games though, it was fairly disappointing. Either cross platform (both competitor and generational) titles, or underwhelming announcements from big companies (Diablo III, Final Fantasy something).

I’m hoping MS have more killer and less filler at their announcement.

    #22 2 years ago
  23. manamana

@22 I think they did great for a next-gen relieving tease. And I also liked, how it was adressed to gamers in the first place. How you can not be stoked by inFamous or Killzone and Dragons Dogma2 is beyond me. Those where teasers, right? It’s clear all companies are preparing for E3 or GDC (Konami). And for how much longer should David Perry talk about Gaikai and explain their approach and implamentation into Playstation network? Of course we will get more insights in the coming months.

I find it hard to see, how gamers can not be exited about this first glimpse of the next gen stuff.

  24. RazorBladeJam

Dave would you be so excited if the ps4 actually came in a shoe box?

  27. SplatteredHouse

@4 I thought the Dualshock 4 was pretty underwhelming last night, tbh. I really hoped those leaked photos were just mock-ups. If I did get a PS4, I’d be looking for a third-party alternative on the pad.
The one point about the one they showed last night that interested me though, was not shown but spoken about. Evolved rumble. If used with subtlety, and possibly to add emphasis, then that could add something. Could it bring sensation as a texture to objects – THAT might be interesting!

    #27 2 years ago
  28. Samoan Spider

@22 The PS4 uses GDDR5 and the 720 is ‘rumoured’ to use DDR3. Might seem nitpicky, but GDDR3 is something entirely different and closer to DDR2 in performance.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. TheBlackHole

    @23

“How you can not be stoked by inFamous or Killzone and Dragons Dogma2 is beyond me.”

Yeah, sequels. Great. Although Deep Down (which was new IP, not Dragon’s Dogma), was probably one of the more interesting videos, even if it was pre-rendered.

“And for how much longer should David Perry talk about Gaikai and explain their approach and implamentation into Playstation network?”

Given that most of it is pie in the sky, I don’t think he should have said much at all. The remote play is okay if you own a Vita, but it’s not worth buying one for, and the back-compat stuff is a dream at this point, and still might mean you have rebuy all your games from PS3.

Seriously, it was disappointing. I’d much rather they waited until E3 and then blew the roof off.

I genuinely don’t think MS will be worried after seeing this. I know I wouldn’t be.

Who cares if they didn’t show the console? You guys bitch and moan over the stupidest shit. I bet you if they did show the console and it wasn’t what you expected (and even if was what you expected) most of you on here would’ve said: “Why did the show the console looking like that?”

Please guys, stop it. Some of the complaints on here are just fucking retarded.

  34. Digital Bamboo

Yoshida’s comment is true, and while it would have been satisfying in some ways to see the PS4′s case at the event, I can understand why they would want to wait. They likely have a number of designs ready to go, and are just waiting to see what the competition looks like…I mean, how awkward would it be if both MS & Sony had virtually the same design, and then the lawsuits would come in…anyway it really doesn’t matter.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. G1GAHURTZ

Why are so many people not that hyped?

Are we really going to have another 8 years of the same gameplay?

I’m still waiting for the killer app.

The F-Zero, the Virtua Fighter, the Ridge Racer, the Mario 64, the Gran Turismo, the Halo, The Gears of War, the Wii Sports, etc, etc…

Games that made the previous generation’s best look average.

Not even a Madden, or a CoD, or a WoW?

Sure, they did a lot, and there definitely seems to be huge potential with the specs, and that it’s apparently much easier to program for, but where is the megaton?

The new Killzone looked amazing, but it didn’t even hype me as much as the infamous KZ2 of 2005, because I’ve pretty much done everything that they showed, in one game or other, this gen.

    Shooting from cover? Check.

Roller coaster ride through skyscrapers while shooting? Check.

    Been there, done that.

Where is the amazing AI? Where are the organic environments and where is the improved interaction?

I think they need to do a whole lot more at E3, and if the 720 is the same as this, then I might not come back to gaming any time soon.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. G1GAHURTZ

And as for the console just being a box…

    Are you serious?

Just type in iPhone 6 or Galaxy S4 into any search engine, and see how hyped people can get for glimpse at a bit of upcoming hardware.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. noamlol2

they didn’t even stated anything about the “no used games”

so what they are trying to do, is to hype people into preordering their
    unknown console

but i never buy a promise, i buy actual games and consoles

    #37 2 years ago
  38. manamana

@G1GA “then I might not come back to gaming any time soon” – didn’t you want to take a break anyhow? Now is the best time, it seems. You can make it back in time for the Xbox / Cod reveal …

And they did show us a new controller, which was leaked before, so yes consider me hyped ;-)

    #38 2 years ago
  39. G1GAHURTZ

Yeah, I haven’t touched my 360 for nearly a month, now.

I’m prepared to wait until October/November to play again, but I don’t really want to be playing the same old gameplay with better visuals for another 8 years.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. manamana

@39 you are certainly right on the “same old gameplay” front. But all the good stuff is coming to E3 or GDC so lets just hope that Microsoft takes Sonys as an opportunity to conquer big time. If they can.

The presentation was all about social gaming, out of the games they showed only Killzone made me think “Wow!” – I don’t care for the over riding social elements of games like DriveClub or Destiny. I felt the show was a let down, to many instances of “We promise in future…blah blah” and not enough “Here’s our next killer game!” It was a missed opportunity for Sony to steal centre stage, instead it was simple smoke and mirrors.

I think seeing the console is important but maybe I’m just old fashioned. Last nights event felt a ‘gloryhole’ we were getting pleasured by something but had no idea who or what it looked like. And as someone else stated the main tabloids have picked up on the story but have no images to do a decent article, as a result its hardly been noticed or talked about.

Don’t really care bout the looks as long as their games lineup is interesting. And it is.

I was happy they put 8gigs instead of 4gigs that they reported. . I want Microsoft to match it or double it if it’s ddr3 and not ddr5. But the on the whole it’s good to see Sony trying a good online strategy. Its great I see a headphones jack on the controller. I love the share button. Now Microsoft turn. We are in for a great fight my friends.

The cat is out the bag. Now it’s about maintaining hype. Do an actual console reveal at E3. Grab more headlines.

Also, for all we know, the console appearance isn’t finalised. Perhaps they’ve still got to sort out things like cooling so that it doesn’t overheat.

I also got the impression, from the start of the conference, that the box is less important than the platform. And they talked about extending that platform to other devices – demonstrated with remote play on Vita and talk of using other devices to complement and consume PS4 content. Focusing on the box would dilute that message.

Either way, it’ll all be known by the end of the year. :)

I don’t see whats wrong with not being Hyped. I never have cared about Hardwarepower and other Stuff, only about Games. As an inFamous Fan there was something for me, but it looked strange and more like Prototyp, what kinda confuses me.

Killzone, like most Ego-Shooter, never got my Attention. The Capcom Tech Demo looks nice, but its not actual Gameplay Footage. And I have no Interesst in this Deep Down Game with On Disc DLC (Yeah yeah, not a good Relationship with Capcom here, but proof me wrong).

And as for Watch_Dogs, Mulitplattform Games are not a PS4 Thing for me, thats a PC Thing. Consoles are there for Exclusiv Games in my World (I know, I’m strange)

And as for other Games… I already forgett everything else, so nothing Important for me there. And I’m still worried about the Camera, very worried.
Don’t get me Wrong, I like Sony and Playstation, I will most likley buy a PS4 (more likley than the next Xbox, even thought I don’t know a thing about that), but I’m far, far away from being hyped.

Blinded by the lights alot of you are. In my opinion that reveal was very poor, and they got the cheek to dis the wiiu reveal. They revealed too soon and clearly wasnt ready to do so. If i will be paying £400+ on a console it sure does matter what the box is like. It better be top quality for that price, something in line with the original 60gb ps3, not the shitty remake’s they brought out after. And they should have waited for the big 1st party games to get their gear together.Im sure the team over at xbox are laughing right now, and im sure they will have a box to show at the reveal. (either sony got someting wicked for console design and they dont want to reveal it before microsoft, or they are waiting to see what microsoft’s console looks like first). ok thats my opinion. your local xbox fanboy haha.

@45 8gb RAM>>>>>>>>512MB RAM. Creators have a lot more they can do concurrently, now.
@46 I mistook at one stage, the fire/embers guy for Alex Mercer. Are there multiple inFamous super-humans, because that’s what I thought they would go for, almost a Team Infamous.

@48, yes, in inFamous 2 it emerges that many people can/have been altered.

In InFamous 2 there are 2 particular allies you can side with, each representing a particular moral pathway, one with powers centred around ice, the other with powers centred around fire. In addition the 2 main antagonists have been altered in a similar way.

As a long-term Xbox supporter I’d actually say that MS are probably shitting their pants right now.

Sure, the PS4 games line-up *SO FAR* is pretty lacklustre, but it’s still early, and the platform itself is spot-on, IMO.

If all MS have to counter with is a weaker machine with a high res Kinect then frankly I don’t see them as viable competition.

Like i said, the reveal was to early. They should have waited. I dont know, it just didnt get me excited personaly. To be honest i cant remember much about it, i watched it last night. The only thing that sticks in my head was how good watch dogs looked, and thats a 3rd party game.
I dont know, we’ll have to see what microsoft deliver. Your right the kinect will prob be what they’ll be raving on about, and i cant stand the kinect.
But im sure they’ll anounce the next xbox when they are good and ready to and thats my point.
Just to say im not a xbox fanboy i have both consoles. just thought id do a bit of fishing lol.

“P.S. Another thing that is swirling around my inbox this morning is a tweet from Larry Hryb at Xbox having a little dig at last night’s performance. “Announce a console without actually showing a console?
