Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter game delayed

Shadowrun Returns was fully funded via Kickstarter in April, due for a January 2013 release. However, the project’s release date has now slipped to allow more time for polishing. Get the details below.

Developer Harebrained Schemes LLC has confirmed that the PC, iOS and Android title will now launch between May and June 2013 instead, as a result of the Kickstarter project raising $1,836,447, far-exceeding its initial funding goal of $400,000. The increase in funds meant that the studio’s scope broadened, making for a bigger and more ambitious project.

An update on the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter page reads, “As we announced a few months ago, we’ve backed off our original delivery date of January 2013. It might’ve worked for the scope of the game we originally envisioned but as our ambitions (read that “features list”) grew, so did the time we needed to deliver!

“Plus, we made a big move from our original top down camera to an isometric point of view and that took serious R&D time. Right now, according to our estimates, we’re looking at May or June.”

Did you invest in the project? Are you wary of this kind of delay when investing in Kickstarter projects? Let us know below.

Thanks Eurogamer.

The thing I’ve always hope would differentiate this kind of game funding from the traditional one is not forcing developers into the death march of crunch time. Take the time you need, do the game right. We didn’t invest in a release date, we invested in the game and in the developer.

@1: Well said.

Quick Question: Is there any gameplay footage of the game?

@2

Was just about to say that actually.

Even Wasteland 2 which is just under a year off has had some in-engine footage come out.

I’m a (proud) backer and since this was communicated *months* ago and was needed to implement an isometric viewpoint, I’ve no concerns at all. Mitch and Jordan are very transparent with the game’s development, so I don’t feel like this will be anything less than excellent. Wouldn’t be surprised (or upset) if it slips once more… but hey, that’s dev for you!

I’m glad of this. They can take all the time they need to make a good RPG. All I can think of at times like this is how much publishers rushing out games by Obsidian and similar have done damage to those games. And some, smaller development houses have been killed by this. Troika Games is a great example of that, and they had so much promise.

So they can take all the time they need as far as I’m concerned. I’d rather have a good Shadowrun game than one quickly rushed out the gate.
