DmC doesn’t run at 60FPS, it just looks like it does – Capcom claims

DmC: Devil May Cry runs at 30FPS on consoles. It’s no secret, but Capcom has teased that Ninja Theory used a number of tricks and technical wizardry to make the game appear as if it does run at 60FPS. It’s all rather confusing, but check out what the publisher had to say below.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno revealed that Capcom’s work on Dragon’s Dogma helped it understand how to make games running at 30FPS seem as if they were running at 60FPS.

“During the course of the development of Dragon’s Dogma,” Itsuno explained, “we did a lot of experimentation and happened upon some techniques for working with Unreal Engine, some fairly elaborate techniques, that allow for a controller responsiveness that gives the player the feel of 60 frames per second.”

Itsuno added, “60 frames per second is a speed the brain and the eye can catch up with and understand. But at 30 frames per second there’s a technique where you take advantage of the brain’s ability to fill in the blanks.”

“So even though you have it running at 30 frames per second, you create the motions and the poses in such a way that the brain will naturally fill in what would have been the extra frames. Also, on the players’ side, we made some adjustments to the button response and when it’s reflected on screen,” Itsuno concluded.

Ninja Theory also chipped in to add that while the game does run at 60FPS on PC, the studio plumped for 30FPS on consoles in order to cram in more style and on-screen content, and that after playing a bout of DmC: Devil May Cry, other games would feel sluggish by comparison.

Are they right? Find out when the game launches on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 across Europe from January 15th.

I’ve seen some new gameplay footage on Gametrailers and can confirm that it looks very, very smooth.

The gameplay videos and even sped up trailers look like 30fps with drops.

I can’t wait for this game to be out, so I can never hear about it again.

I think The Force Unleashed II also some kind of method to think its 60 frames.
And on Crysis 1 they use blur I think to give you very smooth gameplay even if you had below 30 frames.

By blurring motion just the right amount, it’s possible to give the illusion of fluid motion with a lower frame rate. But nothing can fool me if the animation is running at anything less than the refresh rate of the screen. There is a night-and-day difference that I think anyone can be trained to see, if they don’t see it already.

game looks great. i am a bit sceptical about the framerate too, but what i´ve seen this far looks indeed really smooth. i am optimistic that it will be a great game in the end.
@7: thx for the link!

This game really couldn’t stand any more criticism, and now this. Maybe make your own new IP next time?
