Borderlands 2 bug not connected to title update nor DLC, says Gearbox

The Borderlands 2 bug resetting players’ Badass Rank on Xbox 360 is not connected to the Mechromancer DLC nor the title update, according to Gearbox community manager Chris Faylor.

Speaking on the Gearbox forums, Faylor said while the issues seem connected, it’s all just coincidental.

“The good news is that the release of Mechromancer and today’s update are not connected to the occurrences of Badass Rank being reset,” wrote Faylor. “While the timing may appear coincidental, it’s a separate issue that we are continuing to investigate.”

Users also reported the loss of Gold Keys.

Faylor said users experiencing issues should email Gearbox with a description of the problem.

ChrisF posted that in one of the relevant threads at the GBX forums yesterday. I took him at his word, and he didn’t let me down. Letting the game update and grabbing the DLC worked perfectly.

This bug really is a crying shame. What you can lose is everything stored in the game’s profile (as opposed to the normal character save files). That includes the BAR, skins, heads, gold keys, and any items stored in Claptrap’s stash (to twink between characters). This is particularly bad for Xbox users, because GBX stored the game’s profile inside of the gamertag container, that huge metafile that gets affected by all sorts of stuff outside of the game, and which can’t be backed up with Xbox functionality (only moved). Very poor move on their part.

This basically sounds like something nefarious is happening to the 360′s version of the profile.bin file. It’s a shame you guys can’t back up your data, really, because an open file structure would allow you to do that. This is one of the things I dislike about consoles (nothing to do with console users), is that they don’t let people at the file system, so you can’t backup specific files.

This is an issue on the PC version, too, where the profile.bin file can be deleted or corrupted by the game. Solution? Back it up, people! Seriously, if you’re using the PC version of the game, listen up.

Go into your Documents folder, and then from there into the My Games folder, then into the Borderlands 2 folder, then into the WillowGame folder, and finally into the SaveData folder. You’ll find a folder which is a bunch of numbers, go into that. And there you’ll find a profile.bin file (or a profile file, if you have extensions turned off).

Grab a backup program and tell it to backup that file on a daily basis. It’s worth doing until they get all the bugs sorted out.

    Okay? Good.

VG24/7 guys: You could likely run that advice as an article. It might save people some heartache if they lose a bunch of badass ranks or whatnot.
