CDP announces Cyberpunk, based on the tabletop RPG

CD Projekt has announced Cyberpunk, its new RPG is based on the pen and paper game Cyberpunk 2020.

It’s set in a futuristic world with a degenerated society and like the tabletop game, it will be a mature RPG, set in the series’ “realistic and brutal” world.

Cyberpunk designer and RPG vet Mike Pondsmith has been working on the videogame adaption with CDP for over a year, and took to the stage to talk about the game’s setting.

At the conference, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwinski promised players that this game would have all of the hallmarks of the Witcher series with rich detail. It will be a non-linear experience with “a complex and gripping story.”

Players will experience the world through their own, unique characters chosen from different classes – be they blood-thirsty mercenaries or cunning hackers – that they will equip with vast selection of cybernetic implants and deadly weapons. A

As in the Witcher series, players will face morally ambiguous choices, their actions influencing events in the world at large and the fate of the individuals they encounter.

“For over two decades, I’ve been proud to say that Cyberpunk’s been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game,” said Pondsmith. “And it’s been a huge success for me and our many fans, with over 5 million players worldwide. But over all that time we haven’t found the right team to bring our Cyberpunk world to full digital life — until now.

“CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for. Their incredible work on The Witcher and The Witcher 2 shows that they share the same dedication and love of great games that we do at Talsorian. I’m especially stoked that they want our participation in making this game a fantastic project that will live up to everything Cyberpunk fans (old and new) have been waiting for. Trust me — this game is going to rock.”

This game will be developed by a new team at CDP RED composed of veterans from the Witcher franchise.

CDP RED Studio also made several Witcher-related announcements during the Summer Conference, such as The Witcher 2 Enhanced releasing on Mac in the fall. It’s a native version, and not a port. The game will also be released in Japan on August 23.

The Witcher 2 has sold over 1.7 million copies worldwide.

To tell the truth I was expecting more(at least more than 1 concept art)but this definitely sounds intriguing and I can’t wait to see more of this promising project.

Haven’t played table top RPGs since my teens – so 20+ years (gulp) – but this has got my full attention. BR + Neuromancer + CD Projekt sounds like a whole megaton of YES PLEASE.

I love this developer and their games, but i am not gonna act like this conference was incredible. If anything, it was rather dissappointing. First they go around hyping it up saying they are gonna announce something huge….and then this.

Don’t get me wrong, no doubt this game is gonna be great, but we dont know much. We don’t even know if its coming to consoles too.

That is huge.

Cyberpunk pen and paper is fantastic. Currently CD Projekt Red are kings of RPG genre in this gen.

Good luck to them.

P.S. the thing that i like abut Cyberpunk 2020 that cyberpunk there is dirty as fuck. There are punks, killers and there are a lot of nations including USA, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Africa, Japan and etc that fight each other a lot with giant corporations and there is no such shit like in Deus Ex:human Revolution where cyberpunk is a child’s play.

There is even Bioware thing ;) i think CD Projekt will joke a lot about that.

@Payne, it’s going to have the setting and probably pen and paper role playing system. It was good. It’s a videogame so you are good too.

But no doubt this is something to look forward to. All i wanted to hear from them if it was PC only or for consoles as well. We really need this developer for the consoles too.

So a third person Deus Ex? It’ll have to go a long way to top Invisible War…

“It’ll have to go a long way to top Invisible War…”

I hope that you are the biggest troll ever right now. I really hope :D

@13,
“We really need this developer for the consoles too.”

No thank you. Consolized inventory in my Witcher 2 was already enough.

Somebody better call FASA. CD Projekt ran away with their Shadowrun. Oh, wait… Never mind! Go ahead!

This is gonna be so win.

I really hope they’ve kept the writers they used for The Witcher 2. It’s going to make Mass Effect look like Coronation Street.

Really, after all the Mass Effect, Human Revolution and Syndicate mediocrity, this is badly needed to rekindle my interest in anything sci fi.

@11 Sounds like Syndicate to me.

@14 WHY YOU LITTLE!

@18, no, no, no. It’s completely different. It’s really dirty and it’s basically an utopia where everything is fucked up.

CyberPunk 2020 has a lot of stories to tell since 1990. Roleplaying Book story starts from Central American Conflict and the fall of South Africa.

It’s really is cool and dirty and Witcher 2 was dirty. It’s perfect for CD Projekt. There are so much stories to tell that current gen sci-fi RPG games are going to suck a lot no matter what writer there is.

Setting is awesome.

I’d like to see more of this! Haven’t had a chance to play the Witcher 2 but from the videos alone and all the rave comments, it looks spectacular. I’m guessing this will be along those lines as well!
