Report: Sega sitting on final Shenmue HD for a year

Sega has been sitting on a finished version of Shenmue HD for the past year, a Gamerzines report is claiming.

It also says it has a finished version of Shenmue II HD ready to go.

The reason its held the two games back, both of which released as Dreamcast and Xbox titles respectively, was down to deciding what path the series had in the future, according to the piece.

Or to be more specific, in Gamerzines’ own words, “whether or not Shenmue III would ever see the light of day.”

Sega said it was “excited” to see the “passion” seen by fans for its Dreamcast titles, but didn’t confirm or even mention anything regarding Shenmue.

“The games that were mentioned are definitely among the most requested re-releases. We can’t go into specifics about our future releases, but we are excited to see so much passion surrounding our Dreamcast-era games.”

The HD port was teased earlier this week by Sega from a GDC GameReactor interview. An unfinished build of Shenmue appeared on PartnerNet, the Xbox Live developer network, in 2010.

Wow…just wow.

I’m sure I can come up with something suitably articulate to describe my feelings about this, but today is not that day.

CUNTS!

I will be picking both Shemue games, alongise with Jet Set Radio and Skies of arcadia as soon as they hit PSN/XBLA, now i wonder if this hints a possible next iteration for all this games on the next gen, i do hope so myself.
Now if youll excuse i have to purchase microsoft points and PSN pre paid cards just to keep my wallet funds full, this year has a ton of great games on PSN/XBLA, even more quality games than in this year retail games o_O

what is this!?

Can’t SEGA see the method Capcom and Sony are doing lately?

first of all if you want to make a sequel to a long lost forgotten game. You need to look at the word of mouth people are talking about the game.
Make an HD version of the old classic game and see how well people talk about it and are exicted. Begin working on the sequel, when the HD version gets released, if doing well you continue on making the sequel and if the HD version doesn’t do well, scrap it.

This is how Capcom and Sony are doing this, especially for Capcom.

The reason for this move is that it builds up fanbase.
A lot of people didn’t play MvC2 on Dreamcast let alone PS2, but they are interested in the HD remark simply because of all the fighting games Capcom has brought out.

I believe majority of gamers are interested in HD remakes now because they want to play a game they missed out on AGES ago.

And then again would this work for Shenmue?
majority of today’s gamers are all bunch of cry babies, once they see QTE they ignore the game and bash it.

Shenmue has a lot of fanbase and every single fan will pay for Shenmue HD remake. Now to make Shenmue 3 will determine the sales of Shenmue HD. If it can topple 2+million sales then yes Shenmue 3 might be a go.

@7 your wrong about capcom btw, capcom basicly make a new game which will attract alot of new people but will piss off alot, so they release a shit hd port to calm down the pissed off fans.

Why make innovative new games? Just HD up some old *classics* and let sweet nostalgia do the rest!!

Enjoy chatting up those sailors you mugs!!

@9

These companies give HD development to new studios because their cheaper while they still make their new games. DO you actually think they would pay their talent to make an HD port? If people are willing to pay for them then there is no reason not to grab that market.

Your wording seemed like you were saying that companies are only making HD ports and not working on new games.

Ahh my bad. I hope next gen actually does allow backwards compatibility there are just some days that I would like to play some older games.

It’s really weird that none of the consoles have really managed true backwards compatability.

For the Wii you have to buy a Gamecube controller, with the Xbox you have to download an update and that only goes for certain copies. I don’t know about the PS3? What’s that like?

They really need to step up their game with the next batch in my opinion.

I still have my Dreamcast hooked up to my TV. I hope more people give Skies of Arcadia a chance, it really is a wonderful little game.

Then play Valkyria Chronicles.

@17

“I don’t know about the PS3? What’s that like?”

It needs a CPU that was used for the PS2 which is only in the first gen of PS3.

For the next Xbox there should be no issues now what it is using is a modified Windows OS and it using PC parts. As for the next PS that is up in the air but I hope they have learned their lesson.

@17, why bother? They just need to jazz up the graphics and resell them.

@20

I pretty sure they aren’t making as much money as you think they are. Plus there is a huge gap between PS2 and PS3 for example GOd of War collection looks nothing like the original where next gen will not be that huge of a leap forward as people think they will be. In any case I will just keep my PS3 so it doesn’t matter.

Oddly, the PS3 plays PS1 games just fine, but not PS2 games.

@23, it’s easier to software emulate older hardware than more recent hardware, that’s why the BC fatty ps3 actually had the PS2 chip onboard.
