Platform exclusives: “Nothing is bigger than Halo,” says MS

With the reintroduction of Master Chief, Microsoft sees Halo re-establishing itself at the top alongside the biggest names in the industry, with Microsoft adding that no other platform exclusive series is “bigger than Halo”.

“Bringing Master Chief back is huge,” global marketing director for Xbox Steve Beinner told MCV.

“Honestly, there’s not many franchises that have done what Halo has. There’s not many that have broken through and sold that much. You named two of them, GTA and Call of Duty. But if you look at platform exclusives, nothing is bigger than Halo.”

Producer Kiki Wolfkill added the inclusion of Chief adds “a strong focal point to the fourth installment of the series.

““Halo has missed Master Chief a little bit. And that’s not to take anything away from the games that were off the main line. But we’ve built so much equity in Chief and really such a strong icon in Chief, that I do think people missed a little bit not being able to see what he was doing next.

Halo 4′s out this holiday season for Xbox 360.

Except Mario for sure. Gran Turismo may still have the edge overall or be at least close as I believe it has also seen 14 million plus sales. Halo is definately more dominant now than GT, but certainly not Mario.

Actually, Pokemon on DS might also edge Halo too come to think of it.

I mean I know it’s PR talk, but by most criteria, sales, cultural popularity, etc. it’s wrong. More people would know Mario than MC whether they play games or not, Mario sells more overall and so on.

Depends how you define bigger doesn’t it? Pure sales, series sales, hardware sales as a result of. It’s certainly well up there as a series though.

That says the series sold more than 14.5 not Halo 3 by itself. Probably quite an old quote at or just after release of Halo 3.

That to me implies the 14.5m figure was for Halo:CE and Halo 2 combined and the wording on your link was blurb prior to Halo 3′s release. It’s sold over 10m but nowhere indicates the figure is close to 14.5m. Various places seem to suggest 11m is the current figure.

The biggest metric I use when thinking of “console exclusive” size is IMPACT.

At the moment only the Mario has series can be considered to have more impact. Although I don’t think MS was including the Wii in their comparison.

Gran Turismo MOST certainly does NOT have the impact Halo does.

I love statements like this. “We’re the biggest and best! – so long as you disregard those that are bigger and better than us.”

This bit of PR fluff is fanboy bait and nothing more. It’s ambiguously phrased and not attached to any hard data and it’s understandably self-promotional. Watching certain bystanders hammer it as THE TRUTH only serves to show how some folks will always go along with what they like the sound of, no matter how intangible it actually is.

I completely agree with him ( MS guy ). Halo is the biggest exclusive franchise ever. It has sales to prove it. But as expected from ms guy , he probably forgot to mention the reason for it. If you have few games to play obviously people are going to buy them more. That is true for xbox the most . That is why even with one year headstart against ps3 it will eventually lose to it.
