Sledgehammer’s third-person Call of Duty game was “compelling”, but Modern Warfare 3 too good to miss
Sledgehammer Games, now working with Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3, has spilled a few details on its shelved third-person Call of Duty game.

“We came on board to make a third person action adventure game, in the Call of Duty franchise, and we were working on it about six months,” Activision general manager and studio founder Glen Schofield told Gamespot.
“We had a prototype together that was pretty compelling, and it looked really good,” co-founder Michael Condrey added.
Unfortunately for third-person fans, Sledgehammer was offered the chance to work on Modern Warfare 3 before the project got off the ground – and couldn’t knock it back.
“The opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with Infinity Ward, that’s demonstrated that they know how to do exceptional software, was just an opportunity we couldn’t [miss],” Condrey said.
“There’s a lot of people on the team who have worked on Call of Duty before, who have worked on first-person shooters before, so there’s a lot of built-in knowledge about the first-person shooter genre and a lot of passionate gamers. Some guys on the floor are tenth level prestige in Black Ops.
“So it was a nice marriage of experience in the genre and kind of fan desire to work on this franchise.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November. The game’s multiplayer will have its eSports debut at Call of Duty XP in Los Angeles this weekend.
Thanks, Joystiq.

A 3rd person COD game?!? Now thats the sort of COD game I could get on board with. Would be really interesting to see how that pans out. I much prefer 3rd person games, I never used to but the whole ‘floating gun’ thing’s geting pretty old.

I read that as:
“Sledgehammer’s third-person Call of Duty game was “too risky”, but Modern Warfare 3 too good not to make money from.”

Hopefully they will continue working on it after MW3 launches and let IW take care of map packs and patches. I’m really interested in a TPS CoD, and they could really nail that Socom fan base since 4 wasn’t well received; not to mention it was PS3 exclusive.

If the 3rd person in Modern Warfare 2′s multi-player was anything to go by, the fact that they scrapped this was probably a good idea.

I’m almost certain they were offered.. it was a must or they would have been kick out of the scene. Everyone knows infinity ward is just a name these days, nothing like it once was so when activision wanted mw3 off the ground they probably forced them to join in with the production of modern warfare 3.

I’m thinking it’s either future/space warfare or a stealth based CoD…would be surprised if it’s not one of those two…

I’m really disappointed that they were taken off of that project. I was really looking forward to what they could do with it.
Seems a waste to get the guys who made Dead Space and then occupying them with holding Infinity Ward together.
