Garry’s Mod lures pirates to the ban hammer

Wednesday, 13th April 2011 01:43 GMT By Brenna Hillier

The eponymous creator of Garry’s Mod has identified a number of pirate users of his popular sandbox title with a delightful trolling session.

Gamepron reports an error was deliberately introduced to Garry’s Mod, causing pirate users only to receive a mysterious error message.

Reporting the “unable to shade polygon normals” error not only identified pirates, but also revealed the user’s steam ID.

An innocent query from Garry Newman accompanied a rash of reports on the official forums. Permanent bans were quick to descend.

Garry’s Mod is a commercial indie release available on Steam, which allows users to fiddle with the Source engine and various Valve props to create machinima, games, or general hilarity.

    Fucking love it.

Back in the old days, a lot of developers would sometimes engineer flaws that were triggered by copying into their games, and either scare, name and shame or prosecute people who sent them a letter about it.

Of course sometimes those measures were pretty poorly engineered so they ended up triggering for everyone.

The last case of that being Operation Flashpoint. A lot of people were left with broken games and branded as pirates for that one.

Still, just goes to show that the best kind of DRM is using the ol’ noggin’, and limiting your measures to the people who actually break the rules.

Hope for his sake that this “error check” of his doesn’t make any mistakes. Remember all the Modern Warfare-bans last year (or so) that were all due to a bug and not cheating?

@4 So were you banned by mistake? I’m confused as to why you’re saying that. Because I would sure hope Valve is not indiscriminately laying down the ban-hammer.
