Unreal Engine 3 GDC demo gets shakycammed

The behind-closed-doors next-gen tech demo of Unreal Engine 3 Epic Games showed to press at GDC this week has now made it’s way to Youtube.

Get the off-screen version of the video below. Although the video looks like CG, rest assured it’s realtime.

Nathan saw the demo in action this week; you can read his impressions here.

If this is next generation of consoles then i’m going to be super dissapointed.

Everything they showed here Cryengine 2 can do in 2007. It’s 2 0 1 1 YEAR.

EVERYTHING. MSAA, Soft shadows, Anti Aliasing 16x, Filters. Everything is there. Yes, current gen consoles can’t do what is here but you must understand that this is a prerendered engine trailer.

consoles have 7800 GPU, while we passed since 4 GENERATIONS of videocards and processors.

@2 Just imagine Mass Effect with that faces or gears of war chain sawing each other with so many detail :)

Erth… I believe they want this to be next for pc as well. For an average system to run this. which makes it even less impressive imo. Unreal engine games and Epic can suck. I hate unreal engine almost with a passion. Very unimpressed. Frostebite 2 looks better then this.

@3 RPG with this engine? Great.

@4, yeah, you are right especially “For an average system to run this”

But it’s not gonna run on current consoles, so only PC until the new consoles come out?

@7 a bit dumb question. Of course it can’t run on current gen consoles.
Only PC for now

I don’t think you’ll be seeing this ANY time soon on PC. They are using 3 high-end GPUs to run this. How many gamers run that? This is intended for next gen PC too…. we should have details on new consoles in 4-5 years. My guess would put seeing this “tech” in PC line up 1-3 years and something MUCH better when next gen consoles DO arrive. I think epic is full of themselves.

Graphics are becoming less and less important. The average joe isn’t going to notice a difference between graphics now and graphics in ten years time.

It’s getting to the point where the talent involved will dictate how good your game looks, rather than how nice your engine is – because they’re all nice. Ico’s animations are still better than half of the games nowadays.

@2
This ran in real time with 3 graphic cards, I believe. This isn’t pre-rendered, but it can’t run on any normal expensive machine either. This is just a preview of what Unreal Engine can do in the future if the hardware is up for it.

Also, this cannot be done with CryEngine, hard to see from such awful video footage, but there is some impressive tech going on. Every little thing is improved it seems, better and more dynamic shadows, reflections, lights etc. And they got some sub surface scattering going on.

So no, you can’t shout that this is what CryEngine already does. It could perhaps do the same in the future, but there is nothing like the footage shown out in the market today.

hummmmm. I think its going to be for ps5 or something like that i dont think thats its possible to scale down 3 gtx 580 to console in the near future …

let me elaborate. Not calling the demo crap. It looks good but i think we can expect better in the new future. This is not optimized in any way shap or form so i am sure we will see this level of detail in the near future that requires less to operate it.

@12 Because it is not optimise yet and it is for future hardware.I remember article for Unreal 3.I have then PC with 256 ram memory and single core cpu that run on 1.2 ghz(i think dual core didnt even exist on desktop) and they said that Unreal would requre 1 gb ram and single core at 3.0 ghz minimum and i was then like JESUS.Same thing is happening now.

Well if we talk about future, i worry about consumption. I mean to feed 3 GTX 580 with a high end proccesor you need more then 1000w. So we don’t going to see this until everything will be more balanced.

Consumption-performance-cost is all about.

didn’t really think much for the character animations though, but that’s not what unreal engine is for.

@2
what exactly is your point if Cryengine could do all of that!?
the point for the upgraded UE3 is that, it makes the graphics looks like Crysis but without the need of powerful hardware.

you go on about Cryengine could do all that thing, HOWEVER in order to experience those features in Crysis, you need a £10000 pc to run that sh*.
Every pc fanboy goes on about Crysis and how amazing it look. 25% out of 100% pc owners are the only ones who can run Crysis in full settings while 70% pc owners cannot even run crysis. We can at least say 5% can run Crysis in low settings or recommended settings.

The good thing about this upgraded UE3 is that we don’t need a POWERFUL high end pc to run that kind of graphics. Best yet, UE3 is mostly and widely used for console games..not pc!

Cryengines is simply the best and powerful engine ever created but how many developers do you see invest in it? Name me a game that uses Cryengine apart from Crysis.

This is why you should never argue with PC fanboy, their only argument will always relate to Crysis and Cryengine!
There’s only 1 developer who invested in Cryengine so far to bring a game, I think it’s an MMO though I can’t recall it.

Also @2
it’s not CG but actual in-game. It’s a demonstration to show how games can look like that if it uses those functions. Developers don’t use CG/FMV anymore to showcase their engine power, they simply showcase them in-game realtime.

Now leave this place pc fanboy and go take Crysis/Cryengine with you.

Ok first things first.

@2 there has been 4 generation of processor ? Hard to believe…. is this true ?

Well but i don’t comment for this.

@28 Remember, 1 game don’t represent 1 engine. Why developers don’t invest in Cry Engine ? Because until now, it was an Engine that only Pc ( or tech from the past 3 years ) can handle ok. And you don’t need a really cool pc to run Crysis maxed out now. All you say there is all bullshit :( . Who knows if CryEngine will be more used now but is one of the best engine out there.

How you get at this point if view ? Maybe you are a fanboy console that really don’t know how things work around. And again you don’t need a $10000 for playing games on pc.

Developers use pre-rendered for showcase their new stuffs. Don’t be naiv. One example is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5XahF-3DWo

That is pre-rendered, could go real time with the right tech of course.

And remember that Crysis was a beast because show the best graphics of this gen. No one can say that is not, even Crysis 2 can’t compare to it.

But at this time you can play Crysis maxed out at 1680×1050 with one formidable pc.

About $2000-2500 will get you a top of the line computer, but you can play Crysis 2 on max setting on a computer that costs less than $1000, nearly as low as $500.

well i think it looked great… If the next Xbox or PS3 can generate gameplay graphics like that, locked at 1080p and 60fps then i’ll be more than happy. Some people are never satisfied! ;)

It’s funny when people keep going on about the graphics power of PC games. Graphics are important but if the game still uses the same broken gameplay mechanics or AI then it’s still a broken game lol

I like the engine, it looks awesome.
Although i think we need more of this engine and the Cryengine 3 as both looks awesome.I am not going to say i am biased towards the Cryengine 3 but i think it looks better than the Unreal Engine 3, i need to see more of both to actually judge.
The video was somehow not that clear.

@28
so what is wrong with developers not investing on Cryengine to make games for pc?
oh wait…i forgot that pc gaming is dying, the only thing left on pc are Steam, MMO, Counter Strike and mods.
Every other cool games are on consoles while pc gamers hug developers official board begging them to port their games to pc.
GOW3
GT5
Killzone 3
alan wake
etc..are all on consoles!
the only games pc ever gets are exclusive FPS and MMO.

oh…please about you don’t need £50000 to run Crysis.
Like I laid out an example, less majority can run Crysis but not in full settings.

No doubt Cryengine is the best out there.

That Unreal Engine 3 demo was 1 example. Not every engine demo are rendered. This UE3 is not rendered.
Even the Crysis engine showcase was all real time….so I don’t know what you’re talking about.

keep defending the dying pc.

I think it’s pretty pathetic how much people seem to actually care about engines today. I guess that’s a direct result of the bullshit realism wave.

I mean any oldschool PC gamer will appreciate it when the tech really evolves, it’s always interesting, but in terms of actually enjoying games, art direction and gameplay design will always be a million times more important than what’s hidden under the hood.

I can’t remember ever playing a game and thinking “Goddamn, this engine is amazing!”.

It’s like admiring the clay used in a sculpture instead of looking at what’s right in front of you. What the fuck is wrong with you people? :P

Nothing new here. The fact that it’s current PC tech (DX11/Nvidia 580) only denotes that millions of PC gamers won’t need to upgrade their rig as they already have the hardware to run next gen games…
