A couple of videos for Midway’s canceled action game, Hero, have surfaced.

Hero was designed to be a third-person shooter with fight mechanics. The storyline for the canceled title had a natural disaster killing many folks in the city, and leaving the rest to mod rule essentially.

To get things under control, a private military group is sent to the city, but more problems arise when the dead begin rising with special mutant powers

In the first video, a five minute walk-through, it shows you how you could have customized your hero with different powers to combat these undead mutants.

The second video, shows gameplay, and it looks like it would have been a rather coll title upon completion.

Phosphor Games, which is comprised of many former Midway staffers and aided in development of Kinect Adventures, appears to have two Hero-like concepts in the works.

Some of the folks that worked on the game have gone on to create their own studio called Phosphor Games. Currently, the studio is working on a title called Awakening, which looks to have borrowed stuff from Hero, according to Kotaku (the video has been removed).

It’s also working on 8-bit Death, which is descrived by the studio as a “post retro” mix of “classic and cutting edge” mechanics in a third-person “AAA title” designed for XBL and PSN.

WHY THE FUCK WAS THIS CANNED? *cries*
With plenty of polish this could have been an interesting title :(

The story sounds exactly like that of Infamous.
I’d bet that Infamous & Prototype shook Midway’s will to go through with this.

There is hope. Part of Midway’s old team re-placed themselves in the game company “Phosphor Games”.

You can see some Artworks from Hero on the website and their unannounced project looks like it would be it.

They’re currently teasing a game that looks like Hero with the following description:

“We are working on a very innovative 3rd person action-adventure title for next-gen consoles for 2012. This game will change the industry. Please contact us for further information.”

    Best of luck, guys.

the game is like DC Online Universe but without having an MMO.

Sandbox games can be boring man, many people do not like sandbox games.

But i don’t see why it was cancelled! Now that DC ONline Universe is out, it makes this game not worth having as a single player game

    yo!

    these videos are old “man”!
the word man isn’t technically referring to you..it’s more of a figure of speech, like when you say “come on man!”

I love using it..you should too.

anyway the videos are old, the youtube video was uploaded 2008!

I think it’s best if you change the title to something like
“Antiquated video for Midways Canned Hero Game”

Looks generic and lame. No amount of polishing could have made this any less boring than Infamous, Prototype or any other of the millions of unoriginal open-world-type superhero games. Imho this is another one of these videos that illustrate quite neatly a lot of what is wrong with the current state of the industry. And the saddest part about it is that a game like “The Last Guardian” will sell infinitely worse than “Hero” would ever have, had it been released.

Oh, just to clarify: I’m really not a total pessimist. As long as there’s games like Portal 2, The Last Guardian or any given Project by Jonathan Blow on the horizon, not all hope’s lost. But, for the love of Suda51, please stop hyping, much less buying this kind of stuff.

OMG! this is *so* my type of game! Lots more entertaining and FUN than pretentious dreck like Braid or The Last Guardian!
