Rumour: BioWare VGA game is Mass Effect multiplayer spin-off

Kotaku’s rumouring that the game BioWare teased yesterday with the image of a futuristic sniper is a multiplayer title set in the Mass Effect universe.

According to the site’s source, the game’s not a mass shooter, but more in line with the multiplayer aspect of recent Call of Duty titles.

The game apparently features the same sort of multiplayer progression as Call of Duty, and will come with a single-player component featuring a character other than Mass Effect 1 and 2′s Commander Shepard.

As Kotaku notes, BioWare Montreal, which has aided in Mass Effect 2 development, was seeking multiplayer programmers earlier this year to “take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe.”

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has also said that there will be more games set in the Mass Effect universe outside of the series’ main trilogy.

BioWare offered further teases on the title’s identity after releasing the image, publishing cryptic clues related to temperatures and, apparently, steel.

The new game will be aired at the VGAs on December 11. Check Kotaku for the full story.

Hhhmmm interesting. It’ll be nice to see Bioware expand the ME universe in other ways. If this is true, lets hope it doesn’t turn out to be a pile of steaming poo.

Charging in to an already overcrowded genre is maybe not the best advised direction to branch out into. Particularly as CoD is heading into the “future” war direction with the next one isn’t it? Let’s see what they come up with.

EXCLUSIVELY for console players i hope.

In the five years consoles will be full of FPS games or platformers. Thats the only thing where they are good at, because of the crowd.

Bah, I hope it’s not that.

The only thing giving me hope is that the rumour never states it’s a competitive multiplayer game. Give me PSO-lite in the Mass Effect universe — combining biotic power combos with 3-other players — and I’ll write BioWare a blank cheque.

    @4

Some of my recently played games (in no particular order):

    Fable 2
    Nier
    Katamari Forever
    FFX13
    Kinect Sports
    Halo: Reach
    Mass Effect 2
    Plants vs Zombies
    Lara
    Blur
    Darksiders
    Forza 3
    Fifa 11
    Puzzle Quest
    Flatout Ultimate Carnage
    Fight Night round 3
    Guitar Hero:WT

That’s as diverse a range of games as you will find anywhere, and the PC is just as jam-packed with shooters as consoles are, and you know it.

Dont let that stop you from spouting your usual stereotyped vitriolic bullshit though.

Now that is a much better idea. The rumour does say that it is “more in line with the multiplayer aspect of recent Call of Duty titles” though.

@8 Sure, but you could have all the trappings of CoD — Perks, load outs, constant progression — outside a directly competitive environment.

Not that it’s going to happen. Why try to capture a new market when you can futilely batter against the biggest and best multiplayer franchises in the world, eh?

Hmm. I don’t know how to feel, considering how much I adore Mass Effect 2.

Let’s play it by ear first, Ray and Greg.

    Gadzooks,
“Dont let that stop you from spouting your usual stereotyped vitriolic bullshit though.”

Except that all your games that you listed are piece of shit or mediocre stuff, except of Mass Effect 2, Katamari Forever, Forza 3, Puzzle Quest, Flatout Ultimate Carnage, Fight Night round 3 and Plants VS zombies. – these games are good or just solid.

Everything else is a pile of shit in your list. end of story, except the things that you just love.

PC is also a crown of shooters, i’m not sayin that it is not, except that there are medieval simulation games like Mount and Blade, a lot of MMO games with different style of gameplay, simulation games, clever tactical shooters like ARMA 1-2, Starcraft II with Civilization 5, Victoria 2 or Hearts of Iron 3: Semper Fi with Total Wars and these are not just solid games, they are awesome.

I know that consoles have their own Little Big Planets with SMG and with Ratchets and The Last Guardians and tons of indie games…

But every year there are more shooters and action titles than before. More and more every year because shooters are just new genre in the console space. It’s going to be much more.

Considering Bioware’s batting average with the Mass Effect series, i’m not about to jump down their fucking throats quite just yet.

Erthazus, you tell him that those games are crap unless he himself likes them, and then post some of the most opinionated bollocks, using the most niche titles as examples. how does that make sense?

    and, Mount and Blade.. seriously.

My take? Mass Effect is a big brand, there’s a lot of buzz about it, it’s a great action-SciFi-RPG, but it’s got way too much RPG for a pretty huge chunk of the market.

Mass Effect 2 sold 2 million in its first week, Black Ops sold 5.6 million in its first day.

How do you close that 3.6 million gap?

Multiplayer! where experience doesn’t make you better with guns, it buys you new ones! And bits to go on them! WOO!
