Dead Rising aiming to replace Resident Evil as Capcom’s biggest IP, says Inafune

Capcom’s Keiji Inafune has told Eurogamer it’s aiming for Dead Rising to replace Resident Evil as king of IPs at the firm.
“The goal for Dead Rising 2 is to replace the Resident Evil franchise and become number one IP within Capcom,” Inafune told the site.
It was revealed by the exec earlier this morning we’ll hear the first info on Resident Evil 6 “shortly”.
Inafune also said if sales were good on Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 3 will be made.
“Until Dead Rising 2 sells we probably can’t start talking about spin-offs,” he said.
“If it’s received pretty well, yes we would consider a sequel. But at the moment we just don’t know.”
Dead Rising 2 releases on September 24 in the UK on PS3, 360 and PC, with prequel Case Zero now available as an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive.

You’ve gotta be shitting me.
The first game is fun. In fact it’s rather horrible controls are somewhat overlooked simply because the silliness of it all still makes it worth play.
But it’s far from genre defining. Why the hell they would expect *this* to become their biggest title is beyond me.

Yup, that’s some bat shit mental off the wall thinking right there. The Resi franchise is massive, spanning over a decade of gaming, multiple formats along with blockbuster movies and comics.
The Dead Rising franchise is… off beat fun. Personally it didn’t do anything for me, and I’ve no plans to pick up the sequel, but yeah, even for PR hype that’s some crazy words he’s spouting. I don’t expect DR2 to do anything special at retail.

awesome! now just ditch Dmc and make Sengoku Basara / Devil Kings your second biggest franchise. oh, and don’t forget to alter it’s art style, preferably something close to LOTR.
RIP Capcom.

There’s one thing I noticed about Marvel vs. Capcom 3 after reading this news story.
Half of the character on the Capcom side are characters we haven’t actually seen in their own games in yeeeeears. Dante, Ammy, Viewtiful Joe…

That’s a real shame considering Dead Rising is a mindless arcade game.

@11 That doesn’t sound *too* bad, as long as the same brilliant gameplay is still intact.

Well, my sentiments have already been expressed by others.
It’s unlikely, DR was good but not great, I’d probably give it like a 6.5 out of 10.
DR2 would have to be underpants shittingly amazing for the series to make the same sort of impact RE did… Unless of course he knows they’ve hit a wall with RE and it’s time to pack it in and DR is their backup plan…

@12 Actually thats bad.
Gameplay will be slower at minimum.
It’s the same thing with European and Western RPG games. Western are easy and more linear and easier such as Mass Effect 1,2, European such as Gothic 1-2, Witcher 1-2 have enough challenge, depth, story, mechanics.

@16. Agreed. All they have to do, IMO, is take Lost in Nightmares, add 90% new content, and BOOM Resident Evil can be saved.
Also, like the idea i read on this site someone suggested remaking RE1 FPS style.

No matter what any of you say Dead Rising was a way better game than Resident Evil 5. That game was a huge disappointment. I hope that Capcom keep looking to create new IP’s like Dead Rising and give up with Resident Evil.

The Resident Evil series has become one of the most “full of itself” game series ever.
They take it too seriously.
Resident Evil 5 didn’t feel like a natural progress in the RE series, it felt like they were trying to create something else, but used the “Resident Evil” name just to attract those gamers that love the series.
Dead Rising was awesome. Fun, intense, non-stop, mindless zombie killing. If it weren’t for that stupid time-limited gameplay, it would have been the most enjoyable game I ever played.
Not all games have to make you think.
Some just play the role they were created for: FUN.

Dont need another FPS so leave Resi in 3rd person or in over top angled view like the old resident evils.
On the article. Hhahahahahaha….Dead Rising sucked hard and Dead Rising 2 isnt looking much better. I’m a big Zombie Fan (they are 2nd to Spiderman) and i dont even want to try DR2 after how awful DR 1 was.
@23 Lost in Nightmares was great. It would have been better if there were actual zombies but it was still good. I also liked Resident Evil 5. I liked it enough to put maybe 80hrs into it total.

That is gonna be very hard to do to even come remotely close to as big as the resident evil series i do enjoy dead rising and i can’t wait for the sequel. I am sick of all this whining about capcom it don’t matter if you really hate the way they wanna do games its their company and they can do it the way they want it’s their company not yours it don’t bother me to have a more western feel they know that’s one way they have to go to sell and make more money. That is one of the two primary goals of a gaming publisher is too make a great product and too make money.

Dead Rising is his creation; I don’t expect him to say something else about the IP he created.
