Sony: Move is a “virtual reality controller”

Monday, 26th July 2010 20:02 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Move is not a shiny stick and camera ensemble. No sir. It’s your ticket to the world of “virtual reality”.

“We like to think of it sometimes, instead of a motion controller, as a virtual reality controller,” SCEA senior researcher Richard Marks told IGN.

“Really, it’s a 3D, manipulate the world, reach into the scene, do what you want type of controller that didn’t exist before.”

Hot stuff. Marks showed what he meant by creating bendy bits of plastic, fiddling around with 3D models and drawing in 3D, as you can see in the interview below.

Marks also showed a demo where a controller in each hand appeared as a chameleon hand on the screen; he moved across a tree branch by latching on with alternate hands and pulling the wood toward him.

“This is a different way to navigate a 3D space,” said the developer.

Take a look. Move hits Europe on September 15, the US on September 19 and Japan on October 21.

    ONLY in the DEMO.

I don’t see games with Move that are close to the demos that Richard and Anton created.

everything in that demo can be put into a game,im not big on motion control but i can see this becoming pretty amazing in the future, once some top developers get to grips with it,the fact its so precise and 60fps is the basis for brilliant ideas in the right hands.

I could see an amazing survival horror game using the camcorder mode.

By using the phrase ‘Virtual Reality’ they have effectively cursed the entire project, which will now suffer a horrible, untimely death. :-D
