HL2: Episode Three isn’t Valve’s big surprise, says Newell

Monday, 7th June 2010 14:18 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Episode Two

The dream: gone. Heartbroken. Am cry.

Valve boss Gabe Newell has said that whatever Valve’s surprise is for E3 next week is not (reiterate: not) Half Life 2: Episode Three.

In an email reply to a user from fansite Halflife2.net, Newell said the surprise “isn’t Ep 3″.

He went on to add in a later email that the teaser image that was discovered at the end of last week, which seemed to show that something was cooking regarding the final chapter of the HL2 saga, was “fake”.

Valve announced last week it had canceled its E3 event, which would have shown off Portal 2 for the first time, to instead be replaced by said surprise.

Half Life 3, then?

Thanks, CVG.

i think releasing HL2 ep3 after all this time would be a bit silly really

    could it be HL3!?!

If they announce any new games that isn’t half life related the whole audience should scream GTFO!!!1

As Valve have learned with Left for Dead 2, why release low-priced DLC when you can release it as a full priced sequel at retail?

Well, he technically just said that the picture is a fake.

How stupid of you to think Valve would actually care about Half-Life.

HL3 then? Maybe they’ll tie up Episode 3 in the beginning somehow? or make HL2:E3 DLC for HL3…

    Left4Dead 3 XD

Anyways this is a little annoying, although it wouldn’t surprise me if it was HL3.
    HL2 released 2005
    HL2-EP1 released 2006
    HL2-EP2 released 2007
That’s 3 years to create a new engine and a complete game.

@14 Oh, cut the crap. It’s just PS3 promotion video of new 3D thing for Japan. Sheesh.

@12 Agreed. When HL:Ep 3 finally gets released and if it turns out to be ‘Source-powered’ again, I will puke.

    Literally puke.

Oh and don’t anyone use Left 4 Dead as an example of what the Source engine can do, it suits it purpose there; nothing more.

@18 Agreed if this is EP3 or HL3 they better have made a new engine and not just a little upgrade to the Source engine!

  23. The Hindle

Maybe its an updated Counter strike, Half life 3 will be needing a new full fledged engine and they take years.

…Or he could just be lying.

    *Shrug*

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Erthazus

@23 Probably Counter-Strike. People asked Valve to do Counter-Strike at some point.
They even had a poll: Portal 2 or Counter-Strike?

    #25 4 years ago
  26. Tricky

The Source engine was designed as a long-term engine that can be updated as they go. Compare HL2 (before the recent update) to Episode 2 and there was a large difference. Compare it to L4D2 and the difference is greater again.

I don’t expect them to ever release a ‘new’ fully-fledged engine… well, maybe not ‘ever’ but Source and the way they’re upgrading it tells me that it’s got legs for a good while yet.

  27. FlyBoogy

if it wont be anything with Half-life it will have something to do with IceFrog and Valve who are working together on somethingĖ‡(“surprise”?) with agrees with the “not werry interesting for ps3 and 360″ on CVG

I’m telling you man, it’ a DLC for L4D2 that adds the gravity gun and the portal gun to the game… XP

    #31 4 years ago
  32. mington

sad thing is, with the popularity of Modern warfare, an updated counter strike would probably be easier/cheaper to make and could probaly make them more money then the next half life.

Considering Half life’s legacy the next installment has to be a game changer, they should wait and see what crysis 2 looks like before showing anything of the next HL

  34. Raining_Upwards

Left 4 Dead 3 can fuck off too.

It’s been less than year since the last one and i’m not sure I can deal with the same people bitching about it coming ‘so soon after the last game’, that was unleashed when L4D2 was announced.

One would hope that Valve has learnt their lesson, especially in regards to creating a ‘sequel’ that looks every bit the DLC for its predecessor instead of a genuine advancement for the franchise.

    #34 4 years ago
  35. Tricky

With just under 3 million copies sold on 360 (God knows how many on PC), I’d say Valve learnt their lesson just fine with L4D2 :-)

  36. Elven_Star

I guess the surprise is the new game IceFrog has been working on. He’s the creator of DotA, for those who don’t know.

Oooh I’d forgotten about him – that could be a good shout actually.

  38. Raining_Upwards

@35 Don’t get me wrong, i’m certainly not discounting that possibility of Left 4 Dead 3; I just wish Valve’s not inconsiderable talents could be put to better use that’s all :)

Sales figures are a silly metric when applied to brain-deprived masses anyway.

Maybe it will be the announcement of a series of mock online auctions that’s only available to US citizens, except those living in New York state.

Either way, Valve now have expectations at an all time high with an unstoppable hype train, let’s just hope that it was intentional and people are going to get what they want (HL3 plz).

So how’s that Episodic development going Valve? Those shorter dev cycles, more foccused on content, timely releases. Going well? Getting some code in? Workin’ on some gameplay? Getting some characters in? Hmm? Yeah? Rounding out that nice big finale? Some nice levels? So, it’s comming along, right? Right.
