Rumour – Bethesda arming Elder Scrolls V announcement for E3

Thursday, 3 June 2010 09:52 GMT By Johnny Cullen

elderscrolls

Bethesda’s arming a massive nuke for E3 in a week-and-a-half time: an Elder Scrolls V announcement, if what most of the internet is guessing rightly.

According to Abstract360, the latest issue of Famitsu has several companies confirming they still have surprises up their sleeves, including Konami and Ubisoft. But Bethesda’s surprise segment is marked with “secret”.

That’s despite company PR guru Pete Hines saying at the company’s US pre-E3 event back in April that it will have nothing to announce at the LA mega-event.

And if there is an announcement to come, it wasn’t listed by the company when it announced its E3 line-up earlier this week – all of which were the titles we seen at its European pre-E3 event in France back in April.

However, its been four years since the last Elder Scrolls title, Oblivion, so this would naturally make sense.

Elder Scrolls MMO, anyone?

E3 takes place from the week of June 14.

Thanks, TSA.

Woohoo! Now if they would only dump that retarded ‘The world levels with you mechanic from TES: IV’ and the crappy rotating dialog system we’ll be onto something here.

Oh and that MMO talk? It doesn’t need to be a fucking MMO, because if it is, it will likely get lost in the shuffle and lose a lot of intracies and detail that makes TES such a compelling world to immerse yourself in the first place.

Yes, this doesn’t need to be a MMO, but Bethesda don’t agree with you.

  14. Erthazus

@13 Well, there is a HUGE MMORPG fanbase that will jump to TES MMORPG without a problem and will pay from their wallets.

I’m sure if they can make it right, they can make 3-6 million subscribers easy and this way it is much better to do money then with TES 5.

TES 4: Oblivion already was like a consolised MMO, compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall that was designed specifically for PC. If they are going to make atleast MMO version of Morrowind then hell even I will jump to MMO.

    #14 5 years ago
  15. Raining_Upwards

@14 How do you know this?

Seriously, pretty much everyone else I have spoken to (excluding yourself) thinks an Elder Scrolls MMO is A Bad Idea. Why? Because it would unecessarily dilute the wondefully detailed, fleshed out and expansive world that pulled us in in the first place.

I don’t see how turning one of the finest crafted worlds in RPG history into a grindfest is a good idea.

That said, I would *love* to be proved wrong, but I just don’t see it happening, especially with WoW: Cataclysm and The Old Republic on the horizon.

Oh and Daggerfall was a buggy disgrace of a game. Sure, the world was massive but it had nothing in it, the dungeon design (if you can call it that) was needlessly repetitive and bollocks and then of course we had the huge raft of bugs that were never fixed; (doors disappearing behind you when you enetred dungeons and rooms that existed outside the level design that you had to ‘fly to’ in order to reach).

Erthazus, trust me it would be nice if it was done right, but you know it won’t be. It will simply degenrate into a ‘fetch me this, kill 20 of that’ grind that will tarnish the franchise rather than embolden it.

“TES 4: Oblivion already was like a consolised MMO, compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall that was designed specifically for PC”

I never played Morrowind on PC. Loved it on the Xbox though and although ‘Bliv was prettier and a bit more streamlined interface-wise, Morrowind was by far the better game. IMO.

I do also agree that there was a shit-ton that was wrong with Oblivion and would hope that they would take cues from Morrowind to improve some of that stuff, but hey, we don’t live in ideal world.

    MMO? BOO!!

I dont get why devs keep trying to make mmos when ultimately 9/10 of them are failures. Until someone (probably bioware with SWTOR tbh) proves you can make a sustainable (and recent) successful MMO let alone try and take down WoW then idk why they kep trying.

Its almost like devs making hardcore games on the wii, it just doesnt work tbh.

    #21 5 years ago
  22. OlderGamer

Damn. I … I think I agree with Erth. Strange ‘eh?

But spot on, if this turns out to be an MMO thats going to be huge, if:

It is on consoles(xb360 seems the top choice)

If the world doesn’t level up with you(that ruins their games)

And they tighten up their gameplay mechanics.

Also am a tad worried about subscript fees, but it is the nature of the beast with MMOs and I think most of us can figure out why – with all of the constant updating and tweaking that goes into said games.

    #22 5 years ago
  23. Erthazus

    @15 http://www.destructoid.com/elder-scrolls-mmorpg-confirmed-update-un-confirmed-by-bethesda–53151.phtml

Actually TES MMO is not a bad idea at all. TES 4:Oblivion already felt like a MMO game. You just need more players to it and raids.
TES 4:Oblivion was basically a big landscape full of trees with dungeons. Here you go, a MMO type game. skills and other stuff was dumbed down compared to Morrowind or Daggerfall, so it felt like not a deep game at all.
I don’t want for TES to be like a MMO experience personally, but this is how Bethesda see it’s next game and if they will manage to make a MMO experience similar to gameplay style of Morrowind or Daggerfall then i’m in, but it’s not going to happen anyway. Maximum an Oblivion type of game for this generation.
Relax, you still going to see next TES game with retail version, the question is when we will see it. Even if i don’t like Bethesda games much, last game i enjoyed was Morrowind with addons, they still support their fan base like no other publisher/developer.

@16 Yeah i know that xbox 1 had Morrowind and if i remember it was not a dumb version at all compared to PC version. Was there Tribunal and Bloodmoon addon? Because with them Morrowind is such a GOLD game. But even without them it is still great.

    #23 5 years ago
  24. OlderGamer

@ Erth yep their was a GoTY version with expansions.

    #24 5 years ago
  25. Isometric

    No MMORPG thanks.

    #25 5 years ago
  26. Mauller

I hope that they have better character models this time around.

Also, in regards to Morrowind, it was a better game than Oblivion and had a better story though finishing the main plot made becoming a werewolf in Bloodmoon impossible.

    #26 5 years ago
  27. Erthazus

@24 Awesome. It is a deep RPG experience. Of course it was a little bit prettier and dumbed version compared to Dagerfall, but still, it was the LAST Bethesda game that was a top notch RPG experience. With addons it was more then brilliant.

and it was the LAST game from Bethesda that had deep writing, even if the story was a little bit dissapointing, Guilds, NPC and other stuff were great.

    #27 5 years ago
  28. Raining_Upwards

@23 The similarities that you have indicated in regards to TES and the MMORPG format are not lost on me, and by proxy (and that logic) ANY sandbox RPG could also be adopted to fit the MMORPG format right?

I also think that you saying it was ‘basically a big landscape full of trees with dungeons’, is selling the level of immersion and attention to detail in Oblivion (regardless of the game’s other faults) pretty fucking short.

I do agree with you though, the next TES will likely be an MMO. As far as it being a console MMO? Best of luck with that Bethesda, not only do you have zilch experience in MMORPG development, but the market for a console MMORPG is about as fertile as scorched earth at the minute.

All i’m saying is that I personally believe it’s a shitty direction for the series to go in.

Erth, when I said ‘How do you know this?’, I wasn’t referring to the alleged development of a TES MMORPG, but rather how you know that they will get 3-6 million subs and the MMORPG fanbase will ‘all jump’ to such a game in such a short span of time?

Seems like a huge leap of faith to me.

    #28 5 years ago
  29. Moonwalker1982

hell no to the MMO man, it just needs to stay a singleplayer experience. MMORPG means paying per month , right? Come on now.

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Stephany Nunneley

I loved getting “lost” in Morrowind and I actually liked Oblivion as well, just not as much. As long as they stay true to the lore and have more than 3 voice actors doing the NPCs (ie Oblivion) I would be more than happy to give an MMO version of it a try, providing like everyone said it is done right. However, a regular RPG release will make me squeal like a child on Christmas morning as well. Hopefully they can do both versions.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. Raining_Upwards

@Steph, I think you’ve probably hit the nail on the head there. I would much rather see a diversification of the Elder Scrolls brand into MMO territory (again, assuming it was done right) then an Elder Scrolls MMO at the expense of a regular RPG release.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Erthazus

@29 Not paying per month always. Look at the Guild Wars system. You bought the game and can play forever.
But in Bethesda terms it will be a month play. Yeah. :)

    @28

“ANY sandbox RPG could also be adopted to fit the MMORPG format right?”

Absolutely. But Oblivion was already a step for the MMORPG experience. It felt like an MMORPG experience. You need just servers and people in to it. The design of Oblivion was not so good for the singleplayer version.
Yes, the game is huge, but the game design was a little bit wrong.

“but rather how you know that they will get 3-6 million subs and the MMORPG fanbase will ‘all jump’ to such a game in such a short span of time?”

Easy. Lets talk about a PC version for a while, because if it is going to be a MMO i’m not sure about consoles, but i’m sure about the PC version.

PC gamers LOVE The elders scrolls franchise. PC gamers remember that franchise since The Elder Scrolls: Arena. PC gamers have HUGE mod fanbase and we see that people got tired of World Of Warcraft. MMORPG on the PC is a huge opportunity if you are going to market this shit right, 3 or 6 or even 9-10 million? Not a problem with the TES franchise.

@30 Go play Fallout 3. Same shit but with guns. I won’t take another slap in to face with the dumbed down version. Better MMORPG then dumbed version of Elder Scrolls, seriously.

  33. Uncontested

For the love of god and all that is holy PLEASE let it be TES V and not another god awful MMO trash pile.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. Stephany Nunneley

@32 Actually, I was not overly fond of Fallout 3. Shoot me at will. It was okay, but not what I was hoping. Also, with “grinds”, well, as long as there is at least one “go kill 20 cliff racers and bring back their claws”, I would not have a problem with that because I hate those damn things. Subs may not be a good thing in the eyes of a lot of folks, but the thing you have to consider is content. If the devs can give you your money’s worth with updates, patches, events, and a good stream of content, I don’t mind paying. If they go the micro-transaction route/free-to-play, it’s dead in the water straight out, and fodder for slaughterfish. No thanks.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. Erthazus

    @34

“Also, with “grinds”, well, as long as there is at least one “go kill 20 cliff racers and bring back their claws”, I would not have a problem with that because I hate those damn things.”

You can’t escape these quests from MMORPG no matter what because some people like grinding, some people don’t. The only MMORPG browsed game that don’t have these types of quests is Runescape. All quests are absolutely fantastic.
Maybe LOTR online too with few quests.

Still, i think there are smart people in Bethesda and know that they don’t want to screw Elder Scrolls series, last time i checked news about TES MMO, they are spending a lot of money and resources in to it. So expect something interesting.

But i’m more excited about new MMORPG project from Blizzard. This is the year. At Blizzcon. ;)

    #35 5 years ago
  36. Raining_Upwards

@32 Truthfully speaking, I think the folks that get tired of WoW will in all likelihood, get snapped up by The Old Republic. An MMO TES title, might be a shade too similar for their liking.

I’m sorry but 3-6 million subs in the short term for still seems unrealistic to me. Even with such a large fan base for the TES series, do you honestly believe they would all jump on the MMORPG bandwagon?

Using this very thread as an example, Bethesda would have an uphill battle on their hands, since many folks here simply aren’t interested in an MMO-ified version of their favourite universe.

Suggesting that every single fan of TES series would jump on the TES MMO bandwagon is just silly.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. Erthazus

“get snapped up by The Old Republic. An MMO TES title, might be a shade too similar for their liking.”

As a hardcore MMORPG and WOW gamer not excited about it at all. I don’t even going to bother with it.
For me it looks like a poor version of World Of Warcraft with decent storyline. Bioware completely miss the formula of what World Of Warcraft makes so amazing.
They don’t going to have a success with it. + there are a lot of these types of games.

“TES series, do you honestly believe they would all jump on the MMORPG bandwagon? ”

If the game will have good marketing campaign and it will be a good MMORPG, so why not? Same was with World Of Warcraft at launch.

“Suggesting that every single fan of TES series would jump on the TES MMO bandwagon is just silly.”

I think you just don’t remember that Warcraft fans said the same thing about World Of warcraft ;)
And what we have now? Blizzard makes every month 100 million dollars and they have 11.5 million subscribers that play online everyday.

    #37 5 years ago
  38. NoxNoctisUmbra

Finally, a proper Bethesda game. With Fallout 3 game, it was OK game, never got into the whole concept of RPG and guns. with Swords and Oblivion and Marrowind it was just perfect open ended game..

Also Oblivion was a step down from Marrowind, so I hope this time they make a much better game then Marrowind :)

    #38 5 years ago
  39. Raining_Upwards

@37: The WoW situation was completely different.

Warcraft was an RTS with the lightest of RPG overtones, not a fully fledged RPG like TES, so a transition into an MMORPG format was something new and fresh (especially at the time of its release) for the series and was welcomed by pretty much everyone.

And yes, I was there when WoW was originally announced thanks. Did the beta too.

I stand my comment, just look at this thread; the majority of people simply don’t want to see it :)

    #39 5 years ago
  40. Erthazus

@39 if new TES MMORPG will be awesome, they all going to be excited for it. No one saw what they are going to do with the TES, so it’s impossible to predict what players want and what players don’t want.

I’m personally not excited for it because when i remember Oblivion… Well… Oblivion is just a sad game.

I’m excited about Guild Wars 2 and new Blizzard MMORPG at Blizzcon.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. Raining_Upwards

    @40 I agree with you.

I preferred Morrowind to Oblivion too, i’m just not interested in the series going down the MMO route at the minute. In regards to content, unless it’s a set on a planet made of pizza where everyone shoots super-soakers at each other, we can reliably assume that it will follow a similar mould to what currently exists already.

Like I said, I would loved to be proved wrong; healthy competition in the MMORPG is always good, I just don’t want a shit MMORPG to replace the next legit entry in TES series.

Guild Wars 2 interests me, as does the new Blizzard project, but I love WoW at the minute and as such, it’s all about Cataclysm for me.

But that’s a another debate for different day ;)

I could not careless about a Star Wars MMORPG of any kind. Be it Galaxies or Kotor. Now if someone wanted to crank out a 64/128 player MMOShooter in the vien of Battlefront 3, I would be all over that.

My two cents is that Bioware is good but they are miles away from Blizzard. WoW, Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, and an as of yet unnamed MMORPG…all amazing franchises. Yea, I know taking a leap on the new MMORPG, but ya gotta figure with what they have learned with WoW, it is an easy leap.

I hope this is true, and I hope to God its not an MMO.

I’m still excited about TOR. Yes, I would have preferred KOTOR3, but the same goes for TES. If they do make it an MMO I will for sure give it ago, but it usually ends up the same, me going back to WoW :(.

God i really hope they announce another Elder Scrolls.Hopefully they will announce something and yeah hopefully its not an MMO.Got no problem with an Elder Scrolls MMO but id rather they made it a seperate game and still continued with Elder Scrolls V and onward being single player or maybe just some kind of limited co op of 4,6,8 people to do some quests and dungeons if they really feel like they have to add an online multiplayer element to it.Oh and can we have Crossbows in the game this time please :)

When I first played Oblivion, in the early days of the xbox 360, I thought it was the best RPG on the face of the Earth, hands down. Then Fallout 3 came along, and I thought it was even better: Bethesda just improved on what they had. Forget the MMORPG, if Bethesda follows the same pattern, were going to have one hell of an Elder Scrolls V!

But how could you make the next elder scrolls game into an MMO? There just isn’t a console out there that can evem come close Oblivion’s graphics AND an support an MMORPG. Just imagine the epic lag an Oblivion MMO would create, it just can’t be done. No, theres no way the elder scroll MMO would live up to Oblivion. If it is an MMO, then we can kiss the real oblivion sequel goodbye.

  48. brucethemoose

On second thought, co-op on the next Elder scrolls game would be fun. Playing alongside 2-8 friends or whatever the console can support would be pretty cool.

Most MMo´s are all the same, bring me 20 of that, kill 30 of those.I can´t see tes as a mmo, it just does´nt work that way with the big and wonderful world(s)of tes. so, tes mmo =(, new morrowind/oblivion =), or best of all beth learnd somthing, and mixes morrowind and oblivion with Id tech 4 *drools*

I agree with “brucethemoose” about playing co-op with a few friends. That is the smartest thing I’ve read here. Then I can RP with my friends on xbox doing epic quests and combine skills of each player.

    #53 5 years ago
  54. norgesson

without quests becomming booring like on wow: “Fetch me this”, “Kill 10 of that” etc. Because you would still have the original TES storylines, but with the possibility of raiding dungeons with friends.
