Yerli: Uncharted 2 didn’t do “justice to the medium of game”

uncharted25

Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan may think it was “the perfect example” of interactive storytelling, but Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli thinks Uncharted 2 didn’t do “justice to the medium of game”.

Speaking with VG247′s Patrick Garratt at the formal reveal of the first-person shooter last week in New York, Yerli says BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 did a better job then the Naughty Dog actioner in terms of developing storytelling in games.

“It’s another style, and I don’t want to talk down that game,” he said. “It’s really great, and that’s an alternative style, but I don’t think they do justice to the medium of game. I think Mass Effect 2 is doing a better job to the game market, although it’s a completely different style to us, rather than Uncharted 2 or Modern Warfare, for that matter.”

Yerli added that Crysis 2′s narrative style will be similar in a way to recent movie, Avatar.

“Our style is still going to be fast-paced and intense, but our style is going to be about the world, much more like Avatar with Pandora,” he said.

“The story, the line was not interesting and we will have an interesting line, but the world was awesome. That’s what I’m much more interested in: depicting a great world.”

Crysis 2 releases this holiday season for PS3, 360 and PC. It’s looking set to become one hell of a game, going by what we saw of it last week.

Get the full interview with Cevat Yerli here. Part one is here.

Yet more smack talk from the Crysis devs. As I’ve just said in the other thread, they better hope Crysis 2 is beyond criticism, otherwise they’ll be wiping mud off their faces for years to come.

The first screens which have circled the net haven’t exactly blown anyones socks off either, featuring some pretty dodgy texture quality.

At least he didn’t say anything bad about Mass Effect 2. That would be fighting talk.

I love UC2 and I also love how confident Crytek is. I am really looking forward to being blown away by Crysis 2. I’ll preorder and have it delivered day one after I see some more stuff in the coming months*

Great franchises born on PC, die on consoles

I haven’t seen anything from UC2 that made me need to play it, but then I haven’t played it, and people seem to enjoy it so I guess there’s something there. Either way, I still don’t see what makes Crysis stand out apart from the tech.

@4 I’m actually really puzzled by the general oppinion on ME2. It was basically Rainbow Six Vegas in space. I realize it’s gotten 10′s and 11′s from everyone and God, but I know several people who just stopped playing it after a few missions.

Developers should really keep their mouth shut and not say too much before their game is released. Denis Dyack, anyone!

@11 HA HA but thats the point, it isnt a opinion its spouting crap to get vast reaction to make yourself feel better. You have to go onto the internet to improve your esteem by logging onto websites with the name “blackdreamhunk” and spouting piss poor flame bait comments. you’re nothing to get furious about, quite the opposite in fact it may make a few people learn that there are genuine weirdos out there who’s only vice to patronise people they’ll never meet because they havent got the guts to do it in the real world, in your case you do it via video game discussions and that makes it even more funny.

man your a real noob that is again in your opinion that is all it is unless you have fact which must of the time you people don’t have.

go look up in the dictionary the meaning of opinion and then come back to me.

there is always two sides to a story always.

they day you try to silence people with their own opinion or facts, it’s what you call a dictatorship.

I don’t care what type of media you read if there is only one side to the story it’s only one side period.

I can understand PR hype and trash talks … but until Crytek ever released something anyone actually remember for its plot and narrative , rather than its indeed beautiful engine and decent gameplay … it will be as silly as , hypothetically speaking , Street fighter scenarist and writers , trying to trash talk bioware .

I don’t think you do justice to the medium of fact, Yerli.

Man, Crytek are breaking some balls lately. Crysis 2 better deliver.

i’d like to avoid the crazy battles going on here and concentrate on the article… i hope crysis 2 is immense because if it isn’t i’m going to hate the developers of it… they shouldn’t slam games that have raised the bar and opened the door for devs like themselves, if it wasn’t for games like uncharted then we’d all be playing the same drab games over and over

@24

I hate smack talk as much as the next guy but I doubt that these are ‘ramblings’ out of the blue. These are all outtakes from the recent press event. Chances are a bunch of journalists asked him “So what did you think of Uncharted 2?” or “Will your game have a more substantial story than MW2?”. Now what is he going to answer to that other than trying to make his game look good?

The notion that someone is making random and isolated comments on the competition here only arises through the way gaming sites like to chop up one event into neat little news morsels in order to fill their sites with ever-changing content (so that users come back on a regular basis an click on the ads).
