Common Sense Media lists games to avoid buying for your kids

Common Sense Media has released its annual list of 10 games parents should avoid purchasing, wrapping, and setting under the tree this year.
Titled “10 Cool Games That Are Uncool for Kids”, the list offers “safe alternatives” for each title that is currently popular and not safe for children.
Here it is:
- Assassin’s Creed (Mirror’s Edge)
- Borderlands (Infamous)
- Brutal Legend (Ghostbusters)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Battlefield: Bad Company)
- Dead Space: Extraction (Deadly Creatures)
- Dragon Age: Origins (Braid)
- Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony (Batman: Arkham Asylum)
- Demon’s Souls (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves)
- Left 4 Dead 2 (Overlord II)
- Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (C.O.P.: The Recruit)
We wonder at the compilers’ choice of Overlord II with all the baby seal bashing that goes on, but opinions are opinions, we reckon.

How is Braid an alternative to Dragon Age? Seriously; One is a full game the other is digital to start. I wont even go into the overall games genres that arent atall alike.

I wonder how much Common Sense Media’s recommended games will hurt their reputation.

Um, and how is Uncharted 2 more suitable for children than Demon Souls?

I respect their intentions, but their research seems rather suspect. Batman: AA is a game in which you, a huge armor-plated vigilante, bludgeon criminals to unconsciousness with your bare hands. Uncharted 2 multiplayer allows ugly scarred terrorists to creep up on chirpy young blonde reporters and break their backs with a boot heel. Ummmmmm.

Gears of War (Viva Penata)
Mercenaries 2 (Legend of Spyro)
Fallout 3 (Lego star Wars)
etc
yeah, right.

I’m playing Arkham Asylum at the moment, and I’ve just witnessed the Joker mutate two henchmen causing bones to bloodily burst through their skin. In the early sections the Joker also makes two references to having his arse probed. I really don’t think it’s a suitable alternative to anything, even though it is totally fantastic.

Not better; more suitable for children.
I havnt played BC in ages but unless i’m much mistaken it has no gore what so ever in it even if it is about shooting people, unlike MW2 which along side that infamous airport scene has quite abit of blood here and there. The overall plot in MW2 is also alot more adult compared to BC’s comedy shenanigans.

The overall plot in MW2 is possibly the most juvenile in the history of video games.
Bad Company’s plot is a modern day take on “Kelly’s Heroes”, I’d take that any day of the week over MW2′s.

Battlefield and Infamous are the only plausible ones, the rest of them make no sense.

The Ghostbusters one is good too. I agree i like their intentions but they are greatly missguided and ignorant.
