Uncharted 2 used “close to 100%” of PS3′s “power”

Naughty Dog co-boss Christophe Balestra’s claimed Uncharted 2 almost maxes out PS3′s “power”.

“On PlayStation 3 for our first game, we were using probably only 30 percent of the power of the Cell, and this time we’re getting close to 100 percent of using the power of the PS3,” he said, talking in two making-of movies you can see after the break.

That’s it, then. Uncharted 2 is as good as PS3′s going to get. May as well bin it now, then.

We’re joking. Watch the movies for yourself.

The PS3 will have arrived not when one or two high profile devs can get 100% of its power out, but when the medium caliber devs can.

Hmmm… as great as UC2 looks, I’d imagine the best GFX on the system will come from a CryEngine 3 game.

    Poppycock. It’s just well programmed.

I’ve heard this before here, but I think it was attributed to Amy Henning at the time (with accompanied video of her saying it)

Dev’s ALWAYS say there’s more power to be had. New ways, new tricks etc so I certainly dont believe its reached 100% of it’s power yet. Either way, the game is immense in every department, graphics, sound, etc

2 bad even the most high profile games cant touch U2. Even if the ps3 is toped out i think many devs have ways to go. lol 60 dolla odst vs 60 dolla U2..haha waht a joke!

This is an old quote innit. I’m not sure you can ever quantify the power of a processor. There must be limits but there are also corners to cut.

What the hell does ODST have to with UC2 or tapping out the PS3?

well everyone is worried about uncharted being the best possible game on the ps3 and even if that was the case, games like Odst have ways to go.

Welcome to the Internet! What adam13 there did was an age-old practice called “Trolling” or “being a Troll”. It is part of the schaudenfreude school of entertainment. A Troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response.

If your comparing graphic bench marks between PS3 and xb360. Don’t. Secondly, if you did ODST is not the best choice to use. Does UC2 have four player split screen? UC2 also only has 5 vs 5 online mp. Far less then Halo3/ODST.

Halo3 is also one of the only games on xb360 that has permission(bungie from MS) to NOT be strickly high res hd. Why? Simple the game needed to come out early in the xb360 lifecycle. Again with four player split screen it will lower what you can do.

Now, if you want a becnh mark of graphics between the two systems, I mean really need one, compare a multiplatform game. Beynota for example. CoD MW2, if you like or DAO. Because those projects will offer you a better comparison on more equel footing. But really. Don’t.

If you think that graphics matter that much, you are missing the point of gaming. I think, anyways. The difference graphicly between ANY game going either direction is minimal. You could hold up Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom as solid proof that the PS3 sucks. You could grab any early game from the xb360 shelf and claim the same thing. Games constantly evolve. The competition is good. PS3 only fans have waited a long time for something to look as good as UC2. Someday, and prolly someday sooner rather then later a game, then another, and then ten more will come along and excede UC2 graphical prowess. My guess is games like that will be had on both systems. I say good.

Just keep in mind, for what is worth. UC2 doesn’t fill the screen badies. Love it or hate it Halo(ODST) does. Firefight is intense. Meaning that its apples and oranges. Two very different kinds of games doing two very different things.

Not everything has to be a PS3 vs xb360 brawl.

hating on ODST is borderline retarded. that game did so many things right, people will see in a couple of years, it was more significant than we think.

lol borderline retarded huh? For not liking a game that did nothing new? charged full price for a DLC worth of content?

truthfully i have nothing against halo…that shit was fun but using the halo brand to sucker people into buying a half assed game that prolly took 3 months to make is wrong..if u willing like getting raped by all means.

Playing it now. STAGGERINGLY good. I’ve seen live action films that look less realistic and the voice acting and dialogue script are worthy of a Hollywood production.

you’re not playing it now. You’re just sitting idle on PSN :P

Almost every game dev for PS3 seems to bullshit about what they’re doing, even going back to Lair dev’s saying they couldn’t do progressive mesh on another system(like the N64? lols), and I originally thought the Uncharted guys were bullshitting too, until I downloaded a few vids of it, and they are the only one’s who arent bullshitting.

This game is the exception, the game where BluRay actually makes a difference, and where PS3 was actually tricked out in interesting and very smart ways.

I know alot of guys are like “But a system is never used 100%”, but there’s always a roof. To the guy suggesting medium calibur devs will start pulling out Uncharteds, no, they just wont.

Alot more went into the game than just the PS3 — the game itself is just almost too good to be true, technically speaking.

TBH I will probably buy a PS3 for this game (and MGS4, which is admittedly overdue on my behalf)

@tea, paused to save thumbs. Lots of baddies….die lots….sore digits.

@Norlick , it isn’t just PS3 devs. Heard Turn 10′s bullshit lately? And Molyneaux has a whole team working on his bullshit scripts.

“To the guy suggesting medium calibur devs will start pulling out Uncharteds, no, they just wont.”

That was exactly my point, friend.

I feel that untill the bulk of dev can start getting UC2 type of quality out of the system, then the system will still be lagging behind and not living upto its potential. I also think that the average dev for the xb360 gets more quality(graphicly/performance wise) out of the xb360 games, then the average dev can get(right now) out of the PS3. I hope that changes. I have always felt that the PS3 is a better system then the xb360. The problem is that game after game proves that idea wrong. Like you said UC2 is the exeption and not the rule. Its fantastic visualy, and is almost frustratingly good, because you and I both know that there will be very little in the same league as it on the PS3 for a long time.

The minute developers will stop issuing such retarded comments it will be a great step for humanity.

As if art, nowadays, wasn’t far more important to game looks than mere tech. How boring Naughty Dog, how boring…

    #22 5 years ago
  23. Norlick

@Cort Yeah but most of them don’t say it’s because of the system it’s on. That said I know there’s exceptions, like Splinter Cell Conviction’s team saying the PS3 couldn’t run it.

@Pracer Well if we’re talking multiplat games then yeah, definitely, but otherwise I’d say they’re both relatively close nowadays.
The PS3 isn’t better than the 360 hardware wise, contrary to media opinion, but thats not to say the 360′s better. I’d say apples and oranges, but they’re not different enough for that :S
