Valve wants to sell PC L4D2 mods on Live
Valve’s told OXM that it wants to sell mods from the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox Live.
The company won’t be able to give them away because “Xbox Live isn’t set up like that,” so it’s considering distributing content and passing the money back to the creators.
There’s more through there. The game’s out soon.

i should imagine microsoft just wants to cover it’s bandwidth costs. Live is difficult and costly to maintain. one of the main reasons that PSN isn’t set up to be as diverse as live.

I for one welcome these user mods from the PC on my 360. I don’t don’t mind paying for them (as long as it’s reasonable) since they’ve been selected as the best by Valve, are guaranteed to work, and the creators of the mods do deserve some money for their efforts. I fail to see how anyone could see this as bad news, you could always play the PC version if you absolutely refuse to pay for anything whatsoever. Everybody wins, no?

I read this in the news thread before, if you read the comments one guy says:
“If Valve want to support these bedroom modders, why not just charge the PC gamers…. or are we, console gamers, easy profit for the games industry?”
Classic case of not getting it. Valve doesn’t distribute mods to PC gamers, they distribute them to each other via mod sites because PC gamers have the distinct advantage of being able to download content from anywhere on the Internet, not just the single restrictive outlet of Live (or Steam for that matter).
Here it’s not really about supporting the modders but enhancing the appeal and longevity of their games to xbox users with minimal expense to themselves, they don’t have to expend too many resources to test a mod and port it across.

Um…Ladies and Gentlemen with weak Eyes, please cover them now!
THAT IS A MOTHER FUCKING LIE!!!! I like Valve, but this, We can’t give it away for free because that is not the way Xbox is set up is a Monkey Fucking Lie!!
Map Packs and other content can be given away for free from the developers. Having an insider at Microsoft, informs me that Developers are able to give away Free Content, and some have. The “Costs” involved surround Microsoft charging the Developer a “Fee” to put it up on Xbox Live. Yes Valve could absorb those “Fee’s” and actually give away free map packs, but Valve “chooses” NOT to do that….It is UTTER BULLSHIT that you can’t give away free items on Xbox…Hell I have gotten Free Picture Packs, Free Themes, and yes free DLC for games.
The choice is up to the developer of the content…Yes they pay a fee, but at times its a way of showing love to your client base for buying your game.
VALVE CHOOSES to pass on those costs to the consumer…oh and just a little tid bit, yes they will be making a profit on the DLC as well! From what I understand, it won’t be as much as the standard profit others make from DLC, but don’t let them feed you a SHIT SANDWICH and tell you it is all in LOVE!
Now I buy everything Valve, and I love their games, but this bullshit about, WOE is us we can’t give it away free..is UTTER APE SHIT.
I would love to show you internal documents..and I wish some savvy game journalist would pin their tiny pricks to the wall to get them to tell the truth…
Ok…now to come down and have my Zen Moment…I need a volunteer…for a Donkey Punch!!?? ROFL
That really Ground my Gears!

Well Pat has slightly misquote the source, the source says “wouldn’t be able” while Pat says “not allowed”, slightly different connotations there – such that frostquakes tirade becomes less relevant.
And depending on the scale they’re planning for this I think it’s perfectly reasonable for them to charge, they’re in this game for profit and if they continually “absorb the fee” so that they can provide content to Live users for free then their profit margins will be cut and god dammit that might hurt the quality of the next Half-Life installment so pay up you Xbox-having cunts!

The Evil Overlord will accept your offering of a warm corpse as long as it includes 100 naked virgins, the pretty kind,ah heck any kind of virgin as long as they are human, seeing how Virgins went extinct during the Jurassic Period, 21 feathers from a monkey from the wizard of oz, the shavings of sheep placed inside the gullet of a Lion Fish, and one Blu-Ray Copy of Nightmare Before Christmas…and your sins shall be forgiven my son! I thought Halo has user mods (the Forge). How is this any different except they want to charge you for it… odd
