Naughty Dog: Uncharted 2 will not require an install

Tuesday, 28th July 2009 20:48 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra has just tweeted that Uncharted 2 does not require an install on PS3.

Here’s the full tweet:

“Uncharted 2 does not require any install.”

This was apparently an attempt to clear up any confusion over the game’s boxart, which included a typo claiming that a mandatory 1.7Gb install was required to play the game.

Glad that’s been cleared up.

That’s something i can’t understand why all the sony game barely use a install while other (scpecially japanese produced – like capcom/konami games) with sometimes worse graphics and overall performace abuse of the instalation sizes…

Clearly some developers engines just aren’t designed to stream content well enough on PS3 while others have no problem.

I note that, mostly, exclusives like Uncharted, Killzone 2, etc. seem fine to stream while certain multi-platform titles don’t.

Capcom in particular, whether due to the underlying engine or design, clearly make no attempt to stream at all – they go straight for the install option, no questions asked.

The Blu-ray player is much slower than a standard DVD-drive at reading data.

Sony, being first party developers, are obviously going to develop around this limitation. Most third party developers, on the other hand, clearly do not. Hence the installs.

Seek speed is more of the issue with BR. Read speed over the disc is comparable or sufficient when compared to the 360. The Capcom games tend to read a lot of smaller files rather than (the more sensible) loading in a big one and splitting it there.
