Wii now runs games straight from SD cards

Hard drive? No, but it’s still a storage solution, and it’ll have to do.

According to a report by Eurogamer, Nintendo recently updated the Wii system software to run games from all channels — Virtual Console, WiiWare, you name it — straight from an SD card.

Save games, however, must still be stored in the Wii’s system memory. Bummer. But not really.

I hope that leads to more interest in simple ways to create homebrew channels for individual applications. ScummVM deserves to be on the main menu, ladies.

Didn’t ScummVM just get a release on the Wii homebrew scene? This is very good news btw.

This is all well and good, but can they be downloaded directly to the card? Otherwise you have to spend time shifting save games around just to create space to download something, then copy it to the SD card.

A lot of hard pointless work for something that really should never have been an issue.

I still don’t understand why Nintendo didn’t include a bigger HD on the Wii that it’s paltry 512Mb when they knew they were going to be offering a download service.
