LBP level gets axed for no discernible reason
Oh dear. Kotaku’s reporting the case of a LittleBigPlanet level called The Azure Palace has been deleted from the game’s servers for apparently no reason whatsoever.
There’s a bit of a ding dong going on about it on the intertubes, as the owner – seemingly quite rightly, if you look take a look at a walkthrough of the level after the break – is claiming it doesn’t infringe on anyone’s copyright.
Copyright issues have been used so far as the main reason for “moderating” user-content in the game.
“I invested a huge amount of time making The Azure Palace to not only be original, but to shift the gameplay of this wonderful game you guys made,” said the level’s creator.
“Besides similarities to underwater stages in general, there is nothing directly taken from any game/movie/etc. If there so happened to be one, the terms of moderation are by far extremely irrational.”
No explanation for the deletion’s been given as yet.
So. Going well, then?

i think youtubes/torrent sites policy of “if someone who has a good reason complains we bring it down” is brilliant and stops this sort of “eh?!” moments

It looks fantastic, why on earth woulden’t they want this in their game????
It seems like a textbook example of what LBP is all about.

I’ve been wondering about it, but isn’t there a local copy of the level stored on the PS3? Doesn’t it save to hard drive? Are Sony going in to peoples hard drives and deleting the levels from there? I’m just not getting this.
The moderation is ridiculous, and from reading the Kotaku piece, it’s Sony’s fault, not Media Molecules. It does not surprise me at all to see Sony shooting themselves in the foot over this. It’s very hard for Sony to do anything without fucking up massively and generating a load of bad publicity for whatever reason. Big Phil would never have let this happen.

Some of the comments through the link say that levels are automatically yanked if flagged as inappropriate by users. It’s possible that Sony haven’t had any hand in this and it’s just griefers taking advantage of there being no staff active over the weekend, either for the sake of ruining somebody else’s hard work or to make a point about the game’s aggressive moderation.
So the level could be going back up as soon as it is looked over by a moderator, but it does suggest the system could use a little work, especially if it’s possible for people to bring down the best levels every weekend.

That is damn good level, I have to say. Shame it’s gone.
I’m pretty sure that you still have a copy of your level on the create moon if it gets moderated, so you can republish it without the offending bits. Of course all your stats will be gone if you republish it after deletion.

The level will be back. If it’s made Kotaku, it’ll get to Sony, and they’ll allow it back on. I can’t see anything in the level that could cause it to be deleted, so Benny might be on to something.

When a level is moderated you can’t republish it – or so the word is from people who have tried. This is a big problem that Sony had better fix the hell out of before I get around to finishing my first level.

The reason it got axed was because somebody reported it. If it doesn’t break the EULA it will come back. You can republish it, providing a copy has been saved on the My Moon page. As ecu says the moderators can’t remove it from your HDD.
This post from the Community Development Manager on the LBP boards explains it all.

Cheers for that, Withnail.
I have to say, though, this whole “moderation” thing creates a difficult climate for the game, in my opinion. Did they think people weren’t going to create levels based on their favourite films, and so on?

I can still see Batman levels and MGS levels and a Mirrors Edge level, either they’re crap at moderating or there’s something we don’t know…

One of my level borrows a bit from MGS, I highly doubt it gets moderated though unless there is copyright on the exclamation marks that pop over the enemies head.
I’ve never played MGS though, it was the people who wanted me to name it like that and only after the name I put the exclamation marks and “enemies” in the level.
Edit: I reckon you could easily make a Batman level that doesn’t get modereated as long as you don’t use the logo.

I played this level at the weekend.
I got stuck near the start though. Watching the video made it look easy.
Oh well.

Just a heads-up, aparently Azure Palace is back up now, World Of Color on the other hand, is not.
