GamePro scotches 90-minute MGS4 cut-scene talk

GamePro has called CVG out on a story this morning that said some of the cut-scenes in Metal Gear Solid 4 are 90 minutes long.

“I’ve beat the game twice, and am the author of the forthcoming [GamePro] review,” said mag staffer Sid Shuman.

“Ninety-minute-long cinemas in MGS4 sounds like an exaggeration. Like the other MGS games, MGS4 definitely has a cinematic quality. And yes, some of the cut-scenes in the game are elaborate and occasionally lengthy. But not a one, to my recollection, even approaches 90 minutes.

“I think it’s safe to say that the ’90 minutes cinemas’ claim is a pretty big exaggeration.”

Never saw this coming. No sir.

What he doesn’t tell you is that he skipped the cutscenes when he played…

90 minutes for one? Or 90 minutes /total/ed?

The CVG story said that it “has cut-scenes (note the plural) that approach the 90 minutes mark.”

If we assume both statements are right then we can also assume that CVG deliberately made their statement ambiguous to grab themselves some page hits.

Failing that, one of the two stories must be bullshit.

Either way, game ‘journalism’ needs to grow the fuck up.

Ah, the plural indeed. Well, that’d be kinda annoying even, imho. In fact, I wanna play, not watch.

Shatner: I’d be very, very surprised if there was a 90-minute cut-scene in MGS4.

Pat: How about an 80 minute cut-scene? :p

Thank god. I wouldn’t want to sit through that. And if i skipped a bit, id be worried about missing something important.

Pat, following these MGS ‘news’ stories I fully expect there to be a fanboy sitting in front of MGS4 with a stopwatch ready to post his findings to the internet the moment he finishes the game.

With this info, and the fact that some of the cutscenes will even be interactive, where the screen splits into three parts, where one is the main cutscene, one is the MKII (which you can drive around, exploring things), and one is extra info (from the May issue of PSM3), you have to wonder what in the hell CVG’s agenda for putting out that rumour really is…

It was staggeringly obvious from the story I read that the entirety of the cut-scenes in the game amounts to 90 minutes. I’m surprised at the confusion to be honest.

I’d put money on all the cutscenes together being longer than 90mins. This is a MGS game after all.

I’d be amazed if the total time for the in-game cutscenes was 90 minutes. It just looks like exaggeration for the sake of effect. I have heard (from more than one source) that the closing cutscene is about an hour long. Which, if the above were true, would mean that the rest of the cutscenes total around half an hour.

Which is clearly not going to be the case in an MGS game.
