Struggling, Kickstarter-funded Unsung Story has been sold off to new publisher

Unsung Story, one of the most promising Kickstarter games from over three years ago, won't continue on with the original developer.

In what's seemingly the final chapter of this game's troubled journey thus far, developer Playdeck has sold off the rights to the project, as well as all assets to publisher Little Orbit.

Little Orbit will now be responsible for developing and publishing the game, and Playdeck directed backer questions to a new email address that the same publisher will be handling. In a Kickstarter update, the studio thanked fans for their continued support and apologised for not delivering on their promise.

"They believe strongly the game can be an amazing Tactics RPG, and they are excited to carry on and bring Matsuno’s story to life," the Kickstarter update reads.

"Again, we want to thank you for your support of this project, and though we are sorry that we were unable to complete it for you, we believe the project is in good hands, with people who have the same passion for the game."

It's not clear what part of the original vision will remain the same, but it's probably a better outcome than what many of the project's backers thought would happen.

In a different update from the CEO of Little Orbit, Matthew Scott said that the project will have to start from scratch.

"We have spent hours going through the Kickstarter comments and researching all of the project materials, and I feel the backers have made one thing clear – we need to focus on the original single player game and Matsuno’s design that was promoted during the campaign," he wrote.

"At this point, our primary goal is to separate the years of modifications and changes that were made while Playdek attempted to deliver something to their backers."

Thankfully, Scott confirmed that all backer rewards will be honoured, and promised to reach out to everyone to get their most updated information.

Unsung Story was announced in 2014. A compelling pitch and the involvement of Final Fantasy Tactics creator Yasumi Matsuno scored the project $660,126. At the time, Playdeck promised to release the game in 2015, but the studio went dark for a while, before the project was put on hold last year.
