Rumour: Xbox Live to host free-to-play games in 2012

Free-to-play games on Xbox Live? Whispers suggest we'll see it happen next year.

A source told IGN Microsoft intends to allow freemium games onto its service some time during 2012.

This isn't the first rumblings of such happenings, as Kinect Joy Ride was originally expected to be the system's debut micro-transaction star.

Xbox Live was set to receive its first freemium game in Dungeon Fighter Online, but Microsoft stepped in almost immediately to advise the port would in fact be a paid application, and less an MMO so much as a multiplayer title.

Thanks, Joystiq.
